Tips to pass the Mechanical Engineering PE Exam

I passed the October 2015 Mechanical Engineering PE exam (I chose to take the Mechanical Systems and Materials in the afternoon), and I would like to share with you how I prepared for the exam. I did not enroll in a course, but I used the following four resources, all purchased on Amazon:
(1) Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual for the PE Exam, 13th Ed
(2) PE Exam Review for Mechanical Systems and Materials: PE Review Book for ME
(3) PE Mechanical Engineering: Mechanical Systems and Materials Practice Exam
(4) Six-Minute Solutions for Mechanical PE Exam Mechanical Systems and Materials Problems, 2nd Ed
The third of these four resources, of which this review concerns, is a practice exam published by the National Council of Examiners for Engineering and Surveying, otherwise known as NCEES. These are the fine people who also administer the PE exam. The purpose of this resource is primarily to prepare for the actual taking of the PE exam rather than for studying purposes. While it is a good idea to use this resource to study for the exam by reading all of the solutions, studying this resource alone is not, in my opinion, sufficient to pass the PE exam. I think the best way to utilize this book is to complete it on a Saturday or Sunday, timing yourself to only take eight hours, after having read the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual (see the link for the first resource above). Ideally, you should complete the Mechanical Engineering Reference Manual (the chapters that are relevant to the exam material) two months prior to the exam and then complete this practice exam simulating actual exam conditions. Then read through all of the solutions (both the ones you correctly solved and ones that you did not solve correctly). At this point you will need to determine if you need to prepare more for the AM exam or the PM exam. Using this method, I decided that I needed to study more for the PM exam, and so I purchased the fourth resource listed above.
Furthermore, to get extra studying time, I studied during my lunch break at work. I ate for about 15 minutes and studied for about 45 minutes. If you do this 5 days per week, then that is an extra 3.75 hours of study per week that you do not have to do at home.
I will also review the other three resources listed in this review. In my opinion, the afternoon exam is orders of magnitude harder than the morning exam, so prepare for the afternoon exam even more than the morning exam. Best of luck, I wish you well!

Hopefully More Thought Goes Into The Real Exam

This book is useful as a dry run to see how the actual test is formatted. Unfortunately, in this release at least, is kind of screwed up. One problem is repeated word for word in the morning and afternoon sections, but they gave two different answers. They also screwed up on a simple Carnot Cycle question. I really hope the actual test is better proofread and error checked. Seeing these kinds of errors in the NCEES practice test makes me more worried about the quality of the test than actually taking the test.
UPDATE:
I did end up passing the PE exam. I did not find any glaring typos or anything in the test. The questions in the practice exam were on par with those in the real exam. I would pick this sample exam up again just to get familiar with the intensity of the test. Just do not freak out if you find typos in the sample exam.

Great reality check

This isn't the best material to prepare you for the exam; PPI's material is better suited for that. However, this is the most realistic exam simulation you will get. Exhaust PPI's material completely first, then see if you're ready by taking this test. If you get a 70 or better on this sample exam, you'll probably do fine on your PE exam. This was my prescription for myself and it worked out fine, first time through.
