Review
"In the 80s, the glorious age of Prince Charles, this was a renegade's guidebook, revealing illicit buildings that proved contemporary architecture in London - a threatened species back then - actually existed. Now London's in a so-called architectural golden age, the book is more valuable than ever.

With its splendidly naughty commentary and nifty advice on dodging security guards, it celebrates the only real way to understand architecture: in the flesh."
Thom Dyckhoff, Architecture Critic, The Times

"everything that a Londoner, a visitor or any city lover will need"
Jane Priestman OBE, Chair of the Board of Trustees, Open House London

"One reason why it's good is that Allinson avoids flip judgements to explore pros and cons in depth, with major schemes - The British Museum Great Court, the Sainsbury Ring, Paternoster Square - getting a page or more of small type, not just a paragraph... a truly practical companion to the London Scene"

Review of second edition:

'Highly recommended is London's Contemporary Architecture: A Visitors Guide...the book is crammed with maps and colour pictures with clear explanations about the design of the buildings.'

'A joy to read.'

'The perfect accompaniment to a walk around the capital'
Homes and Gardens

one of the best architectural guides
By John G. Ellis
This is a splendid little architectural guide book, filled with valuable information, great photos and perceptive comments. It puts London's recent architectural achievements in context and is of value to both visitors and residents. I like the fact that the author is unafraid to express opinions, unlike most guide books that are anodyne and timid at the possibility of causing offense. The book covers an amazing amount of ground, with useful chapters on areas such as the Docklands, the emerging neighborhoods of places such as Hoxton. The amount of information on each building is good, with insights into why something looks the way it does. The story behind the Gherkin, for example is fascinating.

Terrible conversion to Kindle
By popbrazil
Ken Allinson knows all about the subject. The printed book may be good, but the Kindle version is terrible. The maps are unreadable and the photos are small and poorly organized. Need urgent improvements!
