About the Author
David Mauk is Senior Lecturer in North American Area Studies at the University of Oslo and is also the author of The Colony that Rose from the Sea: Norwegian Maritime Migration and Community in Brooklyn.
John Oakland is the author of British Civilization (now in its 6th edition), Contemporary Britain, and British Civilization: A Student's Dictionary. He is a former Senior Lecturer in English at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology.

A great, easy-to-read book on American Civilization

I chose this book to teach a course in American Culture and History at the university level - and I don't regret doing so. It offers an interesting point of view on American history, very accessible, weaving together culture and history. Chapters are split by theme, and therefore it is easy to organize a course around this. In my country, the university term is split into 12 weeks, which is easily compatible with the organization of this book.
Nice illustrations and the list of terms at the end of each chapter is helpful.
It is great that the publisher has a page where you can view the topics, chapter by chapter, and you can find websites with more information about each topic. There are also film recommendations, and I had my students watch some of the recommended films to compliment the topics covered each week.
Just 2 issues that cost the publication minus 2 stars in my review:
KINDLE/NON-KINDLE: What I miss are some topics that seem so significant in American history. There is no actual coverage on the War for Independence or the Civil War. They are mentioned, yes, but just in a sort of "passing-by." These two wars form the foundation of the USA (constitution and Civil rights), so, why aren't they covered?
KINDLE: I had already bought the paperback edition, but because I teach the book, I decided to buy the Kindle edition as well. Why? I wanted to be able to copy/paste into my lectures (just for myself, not my students), that is, into the Notes Pages of my Power Point lectures. I copied-pasted, copied-pasted, and then suddenly a message: "You have finished the quota set by the publisher for copying from this book." I think that a warning should be set, before you download a book, that only a certain amount of copying can be done. Now, I have a Kindle edition that is useless to me because I have the paperback, anyway. I bought the book twice.
