A Solid Sequel to Qualify
By Amazon Customer
Heh. The current reviews are all 1 or 5. I don't think either quite on, but I'm 60 years out of the advertised age range. I like the central character, Gwen; bright, capable, some focused talents, and a combination of assertive and insecure. The first book, Qualify, was full of action. The second book is somewhat constrained by taking place in a year-long journey in a space ship, but we get some unexpected action. Also, the year is taken up in training the passengers for their future lives. The Atlanteans emphasize competence over safety, as we saw in Qualify. Some of the tests are - thrilling. The year includes several social events - rather a lot of time is spent on the personal preparation. That part may be more interesting for young ladies than it was for me. But. At one such event an appropriate amount of time was spent on Gwen's performance. If you aren't familiar with the piece, look up a performance and imagine.

So. I liked the book, and parts of it I liked very much. A few parts dragged. The ending was a possibility I thought unlikely, leading up. And it promises a rousing start to the third book, which I eagerly await and expect good things from.

A strong sequel to Qualify
By Cindy C.
Every once in awhile, a story comes along that stays with you long after you've read it for the first time. Even better is when you know the sequel is ready, and it is an equally satisfying read.

If you haven't already read the first book in the Atlantis Grail series, Qualify, you need to. Otherwise, some of Compete will not make sense. And it's a great story, too – the year is 2047, a meteorite of catastrophic proportions is heading toward Earth and our Atlantean cousins, who left the planet a long time ago, have returned to save as many young people as they can. In order to qualify for a place on one of the Atlantean ships, these teens have struggled through training and competition and have earned the right to make the one-year journey to a new solar system and a new life.

For Gwen Lark, that includes a couple of siblings, a boyfriend and the choice of whether or not she will be a cadet in the Atlantean fleet, or a civilian. Compete takes us through that year with her, where she has to confront not just her goals – she still insists she is going to compete in the Grail games when they reach Atlantis in order to save the rest of her family on Earth – but her continued fascination with and attraction to Aeson Kasseopei, hotshot astra daimon pilot, her new commanding officer and boss, and an Imperial Prince, to boot. Yes, she is still standing up to him, and still making him angry, but we see some growth and maturity in her character and a little softening in his as their relationship deepens.

I adore the new characters in this story (including a fop of an Imperial courtier and two office aides for Kass – one snarky and one sweet) and the return of some of the people I grew to know and love in Qualify. It's a good thing when peripheral characters from the first book become more real as the story unfolds, and are central to the continued plot.

Gwen's trials and triumphs aboard the ark ship as it races to her new home made me laugh and cry, and the ending had my jaw dropping to the floor. No real spoilers here, although I could talk all day about the amazing twists and turns in this story. There are Quantum Stream shuttle races, zero-gravity dances, more information about the problems facing Earth (and possibly Atlantis) and new clues as to why Gwen has such a talented voice.

And if you think this is just a novel for young people, think again. I'm the grandmother of one, not some teenaged fan girl, and to me, a good story is a good story. This one, like Qualify, will appeal to all ages. Gwen is easy to identify with on many levels. I'm not so old in spirit that I can't remember what it was like to be her age. Okay, maybe there is a bit of a fan girl in me when it comes to Aeson, And some of the other hot guys on the ship. Just don't tell anyone, all right?

Nazarian's writing, from Gwen's viewpoint, flows easily as we follow the ups and downs of being a teenager, having a gift, a goal and a tenacious personality that sets you apart, and trying to fit in with everyone else. Only to discover that what makes you special is all you really needed in the first place.

Compete
By Margaret Crain
I have thoroughly enjoyed this book! Although I first thought this series a Hunger Games knockoff, it CLEARLY is not! The detail with which the storyline is presented is wonderful! The characters are believable and real....everyone can't be a good guy! I have already recommended this to some friends of mine.

"I would highly recommend this book, not only for trainee sonographers but also for qualified ultrasounds practitioners and registers. It would be a useful addition in every general ultrasounds department."

Come on guys -- you need some proof readers -- BIG TIME!
By James Lin
The overall choice of cases seems appropriate, but man are there a lot of mistakes! I would say every 5-10 cases, the answers to the multiple choice questions do not match the discussion -- causes a bit of confusion while studying for the boards, and it doesn't lend a whole lot of trust to what they are saying when I need to double check everything.

I purchased the book in March 2016 and there were no typos errors in my version. I was actively looking for them after reading that last review. Anyway, I suspected the publisher proofread the latest prints. Anyway, this new edition is excellent at integrating physics into the cases and providing multiple choice questions just like the real test! This is great way to review these concepts for the new ABR exam.

Light-hearted, funny and well written
By Raingirl
This is the second book from the author that I read in a few days and it didn't disappointed. It was even better than the first. I would like a twist as for the killer, but it was nice the way the story unfolded. Same thing I felt about the first book: the writing really good. No foul language, light-hearted humor, great relationships between everybody and some new faces that worth the detour.
I can't wait for the next installment and I saw it won't be out until winter. Well, I hope the author continues to make her characters lovable and decent, because this is what matters, to be invested in the characters. So many things to wait for, Juliet and her professional and personal goals, and most of all Phee and Clint's relationship took an interesting turn.
I thought the relationship was rushed in the first book, and I think that something misses in the second also, but I like that Phee starts to grow as a person and take a hard look at her relationship.
I like Clint, but for the first time since I read books, I thought that maybe another character who appeared in the book was better written and maybe more suitable for Phee. I hate triangles, and I doubt that he will make another appearance but still, this shows that maybe Clint as an individual and his relationship with Phee as well, need more development.
We know her pretty well, and that's great, but we need them to interact more. The end was a bit rushed, but all in all it’s a great cozy mystery, really well written and with the best characters I encountered in a cozy mystery. I calculated I read this year only about 40 first in the series cozy mysteries. I only continued with 5 and this one is on the top with another series that has great writing as for the mystery and a great main character but not as funny as Phee and her relationship with her family and especially with her sister.

The second book in the series
By Barbara Billips
is as good as the first! I really enjoy the quirky, funny characters, and the storyline was great. Amy Lilly got me again! I was sure I had the culprit pegged, but I was wrong. That's good! I don't want it to be so obvious I figure it out. I stink at solving the mystery before the ending-so if I do get it, I'm actually disappointed in the book. Can't wait for the third installlment!

The fact that the author is local to me is just cool.

Good Mystery
By Customer Cathy
Phee finds a dead artist, who happens to be a senator's daughter. The whole town fills with reporters and Phee decides to figure out who killed the artist with the help of her sister, Juliet. She has to deal with a new (cop) partner of her boyfriend's, a senator (as well as his aid), a group of artists, and all the nosey reporters. The characters are great and the mystery is fine. I really like this series.

About the Author
Max Weber (1864-1920), German sociologist, one of the founders of modern sociology. He emphasised cultural and political factors as key influences on economic development and individual behaviour. Weber argued for a scientific and value-free approach to research, yet highlighted the importance of meaning and consciousness in understanding social action. His ideas continue to stimulate thought on social stratification, power, organisations, law, and religion. Peter Baehr teaches in the department of politics and sociology at Lingnan University in Hong Kong.

Max Weber, Getting to Know Him
By Enrique Lerdau
This classic is more referred to than read by economists in Anglo-Saxon countries where Weber is considered mainly a sociologist. When I went to Graduate School (Wisconsin) it was not even mentioned. A pity, because it is a milestone in the search for explanations of historical events, in this case the extraordinary spread of capitalism in Protestant countries. One

may not buy Weber's thesis in part or in toto, but it is so carefully argued that dissent has to be very nuanced and scholarly to be persuasive. (An example of such creative dissent is Tawney's "Religion and the Rise of Capitalism").

This Edition contains a fairly good translation; its main weakness is the arrangement of notes (Editor's and Weber's) at the end of each chapter. Hard to find because tops of pages don't contain chapter titles. And the notes are an important part of the whole.

The book also contains several of Weber's rebuttals to some citicisms that he received. Since these critiques are not reprinted here, the rebuttals are not fully self-explanatory. Moreover, this section is not inspiring for another reason: the tone of academic petulance diminishes the image of a great scholar.

still a classic
By Christian Wetzel
Weber's "Protestant Ethic" has here been published along with the author's responses to various reviews; and this is a good idea as it may be helpful in dispelling the misconceptions that arose from the "Weber thesis" and are still rampant. Weber primarily had to deal with interpretations of his work that took him to say that modern capitalism had its cause in the attitudes and working habits of certain minority groups, to wit the "Protestants" or "Puritans" of the early modern era. So it was Weber's primary aim in his "counter-reviews" to point out that he had made no such claim at all; in fact, he assumed that modern capitalism had its origin in various social, political und scientific developments of the West completely independent of Protestantism. In particular, he tried to refute two common prejudices: that modern capitalism arose from greed and avarice, or alternatively, from industriousness. The Chinese, as far as we can tell, throughout history had been as industrious and hard-working as any people in the West, but failed to develop modern capitalism.

What Weber's thesis was all about was a change of outlook of certain groups of people at the beginning of the modern era. He noted, that-largely as a result of religious beliefs and attitudes-some people rejected the age-old and still prevalent ideal of the "universal man" of sound erudition and refined taste, the "gentleman" ideal of the Renaissance, in favor of a completely different life goal, that of the "professional man". This reduction of all human interests to success in one's vocation, has-far from being the "cause" of modern capitalism-simply proved to be the optimal adaptation to the ecological niche created by it.

While the upside of this development, in Weber's reckoning of things, was the emergence of the modern "rationalistic" outlook in all areas of life and thought, the downside was a thorough "disenchantment" of the world. Despite it enormous success in transforming the world and making it truly "humane", the human side of the ledger was not so upbeat. The more successful modern capitalism was, the more it produced a breed of individuals different from anything the world has seen before: "experts without wisdom, hedonists without a heart", as Weber contemptuously remarked, was the final outcome of the "Protestant ethic". (It is now upon us to prove him wrong on that charge.)

Kindle edition severely lacking
By roji
Those considering buying the Kindle edition, just be aware most Greek phrases are rubbish, and that links only work for the editor/translator notes, and not for Weber's own notes - so it is extremely tedious to consult the author's extensive and important comments.

This doesn't detract from the greatness of this text, and specifically the introduction and the included debates about The Protestant Ethic are a tremendous value. I just wish eBook quality was better.
