Short, but insightful and full of impact. Rohr posits powerful--and if you let it--life changing truth. The Eight Core Principles is not just a one time read; you'll want to revisit the book from time to time when you think your life is being driven by your ego rather than your "True Self".

You might also want to pick up Rohr's Immortal Diamond, which I'm reading now. It builds on the Eight Core Principles for a truly transformative experience. While the Eight Core Principles enlightens the mind, the Immortal Diamond enlivens the soul; we need both.

About the Author

Michael Mankins is a partner in Bain & Company’s San Francisco office and the former head of the firm’s Organization practice in the Americas. He is the author or coauthor of two books and numerous articles in Harvard Business Review and other leading publications.

Eric Garton, a partner in Bain & Company’s Chicago office, has written and spoken widely on organizational issues. He leads the firm’s global Organization practice and is a senior member of its Consumer Products and Industrial Goods & Services practices.

This was one of the handful of best things I have read this past decade. I can't say enough good things about it. I'm fascinated by organizational behavior and organizational design, and as an academic administrator, I am always looking for way to reduce what the authors call organizational drag. Their explanations of the ways we waste time and how dramatically it affects organizations' ability to function better is masterful. I've already recommended it at least a dozen people and am seriously considering buying copies for my direct reports.

With contributions from international scholars, this second volume by Joseph Stiglitz and Martin Guzman comprises of theoretical, empirical, and policy-based chapters which carefully utilize theory and data analysis.

Part I focuses on the issues of global inequality, poverty measurement and security. Part II turns to the issue of income contingent loans (ICL), where the repayment in any year depends on the annual income of the individual. These loans have proven to be an especially effective way of financing higher education, but there has been experimentation of the use of these loans in several other areas.

About the Author
Joseph E. Stiglitz is an American economist and a professor at Columbia University. A recipient of the Nobel Memorial Prize in Economic Sciences (2001) and the John Bates Clark Medal (1979), he is a former senior vice president and chief economist of the World Bank, and a former member and chairman of the (US president's) Council of Economic Advisers. In 2000, Stiglitz founded the Initiative for Policy Dialogue, a think tank on international development based at Columbia University, USA.

Martin Guzman is a postdoctoral research fellow at Columbia University Business School, USA, and Associate Professor at the University of Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is also a member of the INET Taskforce on Macroeconomic Externalities and a senior fellow at the Centre for International Governance Innovation.

James C. Atkinson began life the descendant of an impoverished farming family in rural east-central Mississippi. While a high school senior, he enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Force and, like so many young men of his generation, left his home to fight for his
country in WWII. After a year of rigorous training, he was qualified as a Radio Operator/Gunner on a B-24 bomber, and what began as the adventure of a lifetime for Sgt. For the record I have never cooked field peas. For some reason I picked them up at the store today. I had pork chops, field peas, and cornbread cooking in the kitchen while reading This book. I read the chapter where Sgt. Atkinson had returned from the war and sat with his mother. She was shelling field peas. It would be the last time He saw his Mother. Needless to say I had a hard time eating dinner tonight. This book needs to reach much further than family and friends. It tells the story of so many young men and the sacrifices they made for our freedom. I certainly hope and pray the generations that follow us will read these stories.

A STORY THAT NEEDED TO BE TOLD

This is a wonderful book! It is a historical nonfiction novel that tells a story of drama, suspense, tragedy, humor and love. It should be mandatory reading for some level of education in American History. The author has diligently done his homework in gathering the facts and stories of this incredible journey. Any WW 2 history buff would enjoy this book and be able to add to there knowledge of this world event. Once you pick it up you don't want to put it down! I found myself wanting to save it but had to continue! William C Atkinson's admiration for his dad is truly heartfelt.

Stunningly beautiful!!!

This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever had the privilege to read. When at first I heard the news LaVyrle Spencer was retiring, I wasn't really disappointed because several of her later books had fallen flat for me. Now, I'm suddenly struck by the sadness of never, ever being able to read a new book of hers again. The setting is 1950 in a small Polish community in Browerville, MN - Spencer's hometown. Perhaps it's her familiarity with the setting that makes this book come alive. The book opens as the community is stunned by the death of a young wife and mother, Krystyna. No one is more grief-stricken than her husband, Eddie, who is the janitor and bellringer for the local Catholic church and school. Their two daughters, Anne and Lucy are 4th and 3rd graders taught by Sister Regina. Sister Regina has been questioning her vows and now that she is prevented from physically comforting the girls, she questions them even more. As the book progresses, Sr. Regina and Eddie begin to have feelings for each other but are frustrated by not being able to act on these feelings. I'm hesitant to reveal more for fear of spoiling this very wonderful, touching book. Please do yourself a favor this Holiday season and treat yourself to this book!

Delightfully different romance

"Then Came Heaven" is a totally unique romance novel. Set in a midwest Polish Catholic community in the 1950s, it is a beautifully crafted glimpse of a time when the world was simpler and more innocent. The primary characters are a grieving widower and a nun who is struggling with her vocation. Spencer always does a wonderful job of drawing the reader into the emotional lives of her characters, and these two are particularly sympathetic. The majority of the book focuses on their individual struggles before turning to the romance that springs from their mutual respect and support. The love story is very sweet and handled with great sensitivity. I also enjoyed the glimpse into the inner life of the nuns.

Sweet and Simple

Then Came Heaven is my first Lavryle Spencer novel. And, unfortunately, I can only report mixed reactions. I have nothing but praise for the author's tender and heartwarming portrayal of 1950's small town Mid-western life, and clearly well researched and very compelling portrayal of life amongst an order St. Benedectine nuns. Spencer does a wonderful job of developing a cast of strong, credible and diverse characters.
My only complaint is that the plot's romantic development was simply not executed as skillfully as the other aspects of the story. I had a hard time believing that just weeks after the heart-wrenching loss of his wife (my copy of the novel now suffers a little "water" damage in the early chapters)Eddie was already succumbing to his sister-in-law's seduction attempts. And it made me uneasy that Regina seemed so intent on emulating so many little aspects of Eddie's late wife. Too often the budding love affair between Eddie and Regina seemed like more of a continuation of his life with his wife than the beginning of a "new" life with a "new" woman.
Overall, this is a good read. And I'll hope my next Lavryle Spencer might be just a little better developed.

Short but Powerful, Just Like Lincoln's Words at Gettysburg

I cannot do this book justice with just some words on a screen... I am 27 years old and it takes alot for me to get a lump in my throat, but this book has done it as I sit here at work paging through this treasure. Over my life, I have read the words that Lincoln spoke at Gettysburg, but none have so deeply penetrated the depths of my soul as the format of this book. With each turn of the page comes another powerful line accompanied by another powerful image that reminds us that the Civil War was not some fable that took place in Ancient History. No. Jack E. Levin shows us that America, OUR America, OUR country, is not merely a geographical "place" on the globe, but rather an idea, a mindset, a unique human experience and that our history is one of uniquely AMERICAN character. This book should be required reading in ALL public schools. This book is not someone's subjective point-of-view passed off as fact. Quite the contrary. I was so excited to read this, but I was not as happy with it as I thought I would be.
I thoroughly enjoyed book one, but this one was not as good. Not as captivating.
It was still a decent story though. And I do look forward to reading book 3. But I won't rush to buy it like I did with this one.

This is a blatantly manipulative book. The story is lukewarm and the writing uninspired, but my main criticism is the way the book "ends." The main plot line dribbles to a weak and inconclusive ending, while introducing a new character, the sister, in what is virtually the opening chapter of a second book. Yuck! How stupid do you think we are? I MOST CERTAINLY will not be buying the second book, and have added this author to my personal blacklist.

Considering the wealth of Alfred Hitchcock books produced recently, it's good that Krohn (Hollywood correspondent for the influential Cahiers du cin ma) finds the director's oeuvre inexhaustible. First published last year in France, where it won the Prix de la Critique, this book refutes the director's mythology. Krohn argues that the enigmatic director, once quoted as saying that once the screenplay was finished the actual making of the film bored him, was more open to improvisation and less a slave to the script and storyboard than his public image allowed. Focusing on the Hollywood years, Krohn examines each of the major films and details the progression of the filming, from casting to titling, adding interesting commentary gleaned from Hitchcock's papers. Although the thesis is a bit overstated, the sumptuous photographs alone make this a necessary addition to film libraries. Krohn at work on Hitchcock

First and foremost I shoud state that although I consider myself a film buff, I emphatically dislike the medium of coffee table books. They appear to be just another way to rip off consumers by creating great expensive "packages" with little or no substance. There are of course exceptions to this generality and the best one I've seen so far is this epic retelling by Bill Krohn of the work of Alfred Hitchcock. The Master's centennial has come and gone and with it so has the media hoopla surrounding him that made any interested fan at a loss to find the right vehicle to discover what it was that made him indeed the Master. Now that the dust has settled, Bill Krohn's book on Hitchcock emerges as the undisputed source for Hitchcock's film work. Yes, it is formatted as a coffee table tome but this unprecedented work requires nothing less.Meticulously researched, Krohn has done the unthinkable in his text and graphics by not only debunking the great myth of the director tyranically planning the enitre film in advance of production but uses storyboards and the like to prove this worthy point. Nor does Krohn rely solely on the sometimes faulty memory of the directors collaborators. He substantiates all claims with archival production notes to state emphatically once and for all that Hitchcock's genuis lay not in the pre-programmed myth of his work but his ability to be malleable in the collective art of filmmaking. In short, Bill Krohn's book has made me re-evealute the coffee table book format and more importantly, the work of the great Alfred Hitchcock!

Hitchcock at Work - Not Just Another Picture Book

Anyone trying to decide whether to buy Bill Krohn's new, award-winning Hitchcock at Work should know that this reviewer is particularly pleased to be able to offer an unqualified thumbs up. Using original sources and applying a formidable intellect, Krohn has assembled the kind of "behind the camera" quiltwork that humanizes Hitchcock the great director without debunking the genius of the master's artistry. Real-life events and historic accuracy are the high octane fuel of the prose, and a great selection of finely printed color and black and white photos, from the archives, from the movies and from selected production sources, add depth and texture. Those who know Krohn and his seemingly boundless knowledge of films, directors, writers, actors, camera people and producers, will not be surprised to find in Hitchcock at Work the kind of revelations that make the best biographies compelling reading. The book is big in every way. Hitchcock at Work not only has visual coffee-table appeal, but is also an excellent reference tool. It will surprise and delight real cineastes and casual movie goers alike. In addition, Krohn writes from the perspective of someone who understands how movies are made. His years as a publicist at Fox and the work he did posthumously on behalf of Orson Wells, assembling and producing a completed version of that director's previously unfinished South American movie, along with decades of critical writing for the prestigious Cahiers du Cinema, give him a rare skillset with which to gently and precisely open up Hitchcock's world in ways hitherto unavailable to film buffs and audiences. But Krohn is no intellectual snob. His excellent prose style is clear and readable. If you can only buy one book about Hitchcock, this is the one, whether for its film history, detail and insights, or simply because you want easy access to the many images and visual delights which Hitchcock brought to the screen. Five stars aren't enough! END

An essential book about a great director

In essence, this is a book intended to demythologize Alfred Hitchcock. It has long been a staple of criticism on Hitchcock's films to buy into his assertions that he made his films in his head, via screenplays and storyboards, prior to production, and that the production itself was largely irrelevant. This claim, amazingly, has gone largely uncontested until Krohn's book comes along and shatters it to pieces. One would expect that that sort of demythologization would result in a feeling that Hitchcock's films were, somehow, less great than we felt them to be before, but that is anything but the case. If anything, Krohn's work reaffirms Hitchcock's status as one of the all-time great filmmakers.
A previous reviewer criticized Krohn's book for giving some films more attention than others. Why carp? What's here is great, and it is reasonable to assume that Hitchcock improvised more on some sets than he did on others, and that the sort of documentation one needs to do the necessary research was more in abundance for some films than for others. Therefore, it is unfair to expect a film-by-film rundown. What we should focus on is what IS in the book, not what isn't, and what's here is amongst the most important work ever done on Hitchcock's films.
If you are a fan of Hitchcock's, and enjoy reading about his films as well as watching them, then you owe it to yourself to own this book.
