About the Author

Anthony Sleva is president of Sleva Associates, an electrical consulting and training company. He is a registered Professional Engineer with a BSEE degree from Pennsylvania State University. During his career, he has designed electrical systems for nuclear generating stations; designed 500-230 KV, 230-69 KV, 138-12 KV and 69-12 KV substations; provided technical support to power dispatchers, system operators and plant operators; and developed technical training programs for technicians, drafters, designers and technical clerks. Mr. Sleva specializes in the analysis of power system events that cause the loss of customer load and/or the initiation of emergency load control procedures as well as events that may have been caused by incorrect protective relay actuations.

From the ground up

The text of this book starts with bringing together all of the information which people need to understand fundamentally regarding protection systems. From there it goes very well in the parameters of operation and very good detail of the material in which to show what is permissible and what is potentially catastrophic. The formulas, graphs, along with the schematics are very detailed for even those who want to go into the Power Systems profession and have no experience. I would recommend this regardless of the price as this needs to be part of a professional library for the lineman wanting to learn more or the potential Electrical Engineer in need of a solid foundation of understanding the equipment.

Good book.

Great book for showing how to develop actual relay settings. Not many other practical relay books exist out there like this one that actually walk the reader through the development of settings, both the "how" and the "why". This book will literally step the reader through example problems on what values, equations, and considerations to use when setting protective relays. It's almost like having a personal mentor guide you through protective relay applications and settings. I haven't gotten through the entire book, but I don't believe it has motor or generator settings/applications. I would make that addition as a suggestion to the author for the next edition of this book. Otherwise, I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Toby Harnden was appointed Irish Correspondent of the Daily Telegraph in 1996, after first joining the newspaper as a reporter in London. He was one of the first journalists at the scene of the IRA's Docklands bomb and, after moving to Belfast, reported on the second IRA ceasefire, the Good Friday Agreement and the Omagh bombing as well numerous explosions, shootings, riots, marches and political crises. He grew up in Manchester and was educated at Corpus Christi College, Oxford, where he took a First in Modern History in 1988. Recently appointed the Daily Telegraph's bureau chief in Washington, this is his first book.

Interesting account, relatively unbiased

The idea of a Daily Telegraph journalist - Toby Harnden - writing an account of the IRA's campaign in South Armagh during the last 30 years of the Irish "Troubles" may not seem promising to those of an Irish Republican disposition. The Daily Telegraph is a notorious organ of the British establishment. However, after reading the book, one feels Harnden has written a dispassionate account, and even that he has come to underset the minset of those he has spoken to in the course of his research. The book essentially details the IRA's campaign of bombings, shootings and abductions and the war of attrition being fought against the British Army over the period. While essentially chronological in order, the book also deals with certain subjects on a thematic basis - the role of informers, the SAS, and so on. The role is a slightly uneven narrative. However, in total, the book provides a good starting point to those with an interest in this most recent, unresolved period of Irish history. As noted earlier, Harnden does not take the non-thinking option of dismissing the IRA as maniacal killers, but rather as protagonists in a historically situated conflict, albeit one where the methods and motivation of boths were very often less than honourable

Very interesting, but a little disorganized

An terrific description of the IRA's history and recent operations in South Armagh, one of the most notorious areas of Northern Ireland during the Troubles. Admirable both for its attention to technical and tactical detail -- what makes a good sniper's rifle, how do the IRA stage a sniper's attack (it takes up to 20 people), the meticulous care that went into some of their ambushes -- and for its ability not to take sides, even though the author's newspaper would clearly be associated with the British establishment. It really makes you feel what it was like to be on the ground, and gives you a great understanding of how the region's history of ungovernability relates to the events of the Troubles.

I have two criticisms, neither of them major. First, although it's a gripping read and each paragraph seems to follow from the previous one, on a chapter-by-chapter scale it's a bit disorganized. One chapter, dealing with the Kingsmill massacre and other events over the course of several years, is entitled "A long-awaited day", but never identifies which day in particular it's talking about. Second, it's all about military operations by the IRA in South Armagh and doesn't attempt to deal with the internal politics of Sinn Fein or the IRA. Given the huge temperamental and historical differences between South Armagh on the one hand and the Belfast and Derry brigades, you leave the book surprised that Tom "Slab" Murphy and Gerry Adams were ever in the same organisation, let alone that South Armagh stuck with the Adams/McGuinness leadership through the change to a political approach.

But these are quibbles. This is an excellent book, unsurpassed as a description of the war on the ground. Recommended.

At last something that leaves the cities

OK, so the main battles that resulted in political breakthroughs were in the cities, but nonetheless, the county of South Armagh played an important role in the Northern Ireland Conflict. Reading books about the city operations in Belfast and Derry tends to get the reader more involved in the politics of the conflict than the actual day-to-day operations that the British Army and the IRA were involved in. By looking at this particular county, we can see how its fierce republicanism has helped to shape the conflict as a whole. This was where many of the British troops in Northern Ireland were killed and it became one of the most dangerous places to serve in in the British Army. This book gives a balanced view from all sides and even includes views from the SAS and undercover RUC units. A must read!

Charlie Francis, three times a Canadian Sprint champion, served as a national sprint coach for 9 years. The Definitive Book on Sprinting

I purchased this book when it was first released in late 1990 and have read it cover to cover several dozen times over the years. Unfortunately, most of the attention and commentary regarding this book give a false impression of its content. Though the narrative does culminate in the drug scandal in Seoul, the topic of drug use by athletes (and by Charlie's sprinters in particular) is really of secondary importance and only constitutes a small portion of the book.

Speed Trap is primarily an autobiography of Charlie's career as an athlete and coach. In the course of reading about Charlie's training as an Olympic sprinter himself and the subsequent evolution of his coaching methods, the reader is treated to perhaps the best education on the technical aspects of sprinting ever put into print. From his early training with Percy Duncan and Harry Jerome to his subsequent tutelage under legendary sprint coach Gerard Mach, Charlie describes what he learned from these greats as well as how he synthesized and adapted their methods in developing his own training system. I know of no other book on sprinting that comes close to providing the quality of technical insight found in Speed Trap. To a certain extent, Speed Trap is a technical treatise on sprinting masquerading as an autobiography. While the description of the careers of athletes such as Ben Johnson, Angela Issajenko, Desai Williams, et al., is entertaining in its own right, it also serves to provide anecdotes that illustrate many of the technical concepts discussed throughout the book. Anyone who has met Charlie in person knows this is exactly how he teaches. In her own autobiography (Running Risks) Angela Issajenko describes how Charlie always seemed to have a story to explain any point he was trying to get across to his athletes.

Even on the topic of drugs, Speed Trap offers insights not found anywhere else. Most if not all of the literature related to anabolic steroids is dominated by the field of bodybuilding and to a lesser extent powerlifting. Charlie explains how steroid use by sprinters and similar athletes is a world apart from bodybuilding. As an example, in her first year of steroid use, Angela Issajenko's total dosage for the entire year was about 700mg, an amount many bodybuilders would use in a couple days. Much of the discussion of drug use by athletes is part of the larger topic of how sport is administered by the various governing bodies around the world. Charlie provides a very sobering insight into the bureaucratic and often corrupt nature of international sport.

Lastly, in addition to the quality of its content, Speed Trap is also remarkable for the quality of the writing. The narrative is written in a very conversational style that makes it very easy to read. Having met and trained with Charlie on a couple of occasions, I can attest to the fact that the book reads pretty much the way Charlie talks. I cannot recommend this book more highly for those interested specifically in sprinting or just training in general. If you can find a copy, it is well worth buying.

Charlie Francis, one in a billion

In an era where more is better, Charlie Francis gives a candid view on his methods of training some of the worlds best athletes. He was always looking for ways to improve his "system" with his athletes reaping the benefits. His unselfish approach and intellect were once in a lifetime. This book can be applied to any individual or team sport, not just track and field. A must for any current coach or aspiring coach.

Makes a good story, and some fine insight into better sprint training

Charlie Francis, like any elite coach taken out of the sport by drug controversy, lays out a good story about Ben & the Canadian sprint team's rise to international success. He brings up a lot of sound points from the world of sprint training that endure in the most successful camps and he makes what is probably a fair description of drug use at the elite level.

Sometimes it sounds like he paints everyone but his sprinters as the bad guys, and maybe that's true, but it is a fun read - especially if you honestly love international track & field. There are some interesting anecdotes slipped in throughout the book, including his experience at the Munich Olympics, the impact of Olympic boycotting on the athletes forced out of competition, and troubles bringing support to big meets.

Good story, fun to read, and there's some good stuff in there for any sprinter or coach to pick up on.
