As a Social Worker I'm often recommending books to clients. Clients enjoy reading during their journey in therapy as it helps clients feel more engaged in the therapeutic process and we tend to talk about the book in session. I always recommended one book to my clients, when they asked for a book that had changed my life about ten years ago. I only mention this book because until I read Noah's book I had never read another book that has ever come close to making me feel so empowered and filled me with such hope as Noah's book did.

I read Noah's book three times. I did this because I was surprised by the reaction I had when I first read it that I needed to read it again. I had the exact same reaction as I did to the other book I mention above years back. This reaction consisted of feelings of extreme calmness, slow breathing, I was at peace, I felt empowered; positive. But why? How could a book do this? It's just words! What was happening? And then I realized.... Noah's book was literally making me aware of my breathing, of my actual circumstances, of the actual moment and in that particular moment I was enjoying a nice, sunny Saturday at home with my amazing fianc�, with my dog, my life in order, things were great. I was happy. I could enjoy this because I was in the moment and I could see this! Why couldn't I see this always? I began to wonder why it felt short lived as if it was about to go away and I needed to take it all in. I thought about how I speak to clients every day about this exact concept and how I say to them they have to work on being in the moment and feeling the moment more but then I forget to do this myself? Yes, it turns out I did. I'm human it turns out. I have to retrain my brain to "check in" with the moment and myself. Since reading this book I am much more aware of this concept and all of teachings in the book but it is a work in process. Noah's words were inspiring and powerful and helped remind me about what is truly important in life and what it's all about. It's the seconds in life that pass by each day that matter and being present can make all the difference. He helped bring me back to where I'm at peace. His deep appreciation of meditation and his journey to find himself is truly inspiring and I think it will help inspire others. I look forward to recommending this book to clients in the future and will retire the book I mentioned above from this day forward.

This book saved my life!

I have been dealing with mental health issues for years, most of which were so severe that I couldn't function right. I happened upon this book one night when I was looking for free reading material. This was one of those special promotions; but, it ended up being far more special than just a free download. This book literally saved my life! I discovered, both through this book and recent real-life experiences, that the main point established in this book is the cold, hard truth - "Thoughts, not circumstances, create actions." Since then, I have started thinking more clearly, not to mention the fact that my temper is under control. Best of all, this book helped me get over my ex, three years after we broke up and I had moved on with someone else. My feelings towards my ex were causing problems in my current relationship for a long time. Not anymore.

The missing link I have been searching for!

A Guide To The Present Moment has showed me how to live in peace, as opposed to just how to experience peace. The Power Of Now by Eckhart Tolle helped me to experience the wonderful peace of just being here in the Now. And I loved that. But, no matter how hard I tried, I wasn't able to make this peace my normal experience. I would have to make an effort to focus on the present moment. But I definitely wasn't living in the moment.

Now that I have read Noah's book, I can now say that I know how to live in peace, and not just have these momentary experiences of happiness or peace. Through the 5 steps that Noah describes, I have managed to disbelieve a lot of the thoughts that were making me unhappy. So I don't need to focus on the present moment to be happy, I'm already happy because I don't have many of the thoughts that were making me stressed and worried about what others think. If you want more peace in your life, I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
In 2007, Nikola Danaylov was a master's degree student in Political Science looking for an interesting topic to write his thesis on. Nikola was tired of WWI and WWII research papers and wanted to do something different, something that not everyone was familiar with, where he could dare to make a contribution. One day, as he was watching the news coming from Iraq and Afghanistan, Nikola decided to look into drone warfare. Doing research on military drones pushed him into the field of Artificial Intelligence and there he discovered Ray Kurzweil's seminal book, "The Singularity is Near." The very next book he read was Charlie Stross' science fiction novel, "Accelerando." In 2009, he completed his master's degree and entered the army of unemployed job seekers at the peak of the recession. "I stopped counting after I sent out 300 resumes - I got one interview which apparently didn't go well because they never called me back, Nikola remembers. "One of my applications went out to the first and only blog dedicated to the technological singularity - Singularity Hub. The Hub was looking to hire a staff writer and, given my education, past research and writing skills, I thought I made the best candidate you could get. I eagerly anticipated an email telling me how totally perfect I was for the job, but the email never came. So, after two weeks of waiting in vain, it slowly started to dawn on me that I wasn't getting that job either. Then, a crazy thought occurred to me: maybe, just maybe, I didn't need them. Perhaps there was some tiny chance I might be able to do it on my own. I could start my own Singularity website. I mean, how hard could it be?" Seven years after its humble beginning, the Singularity.FM podcast has had over 4.2 million views on iTunes and YouTube and has been featured on international TV networks as well as on some of the biggest blogs in the world, such as BBC, ArteTV, TV Japan, io9, The Telegraph, The Huffington Post, ZDNet, BoingBoing and others. Riveting interviews that will stretch your mind and satisfy your curiosity.

I have been listening to Nikola Danaylov's (alias Socrates)'s superbly incisive and insightful interviews for a long time, and wait with excitement for the next fascinating person he interviews [see singularityweblog]. Now we have these incredible interviews compiled into Conversations with the Future, which I find so valuable in complementing the audio and video interviews. Regardless of your how one thinks about the future, each of these interviews will sharpen your thinking and open new reflective and contemplative avenues for any curious soul. I have learned a considerable amount from each individual, and my reading has broadened appreciably as a result of Nikola Danaylov's remarkable accumulation of learned people's deep thoughts and deep work. I am already looking forward to the next volume!!

The title says it all

This is an excellent read, coming at the questions of the "technological singularity" from a variety of different angles. Remarkably, the "conversations" are with some really high-level thinkers, yet are presented in a way that is readily accessible even if you've never given this stuff any serious thought before. And, rather than presenting a single, monolithic "this is what's coming" vision, these conversations offer a diversity of views, coming at the question from many different angles.

Whether we think about it consciously or not, we all know that technology is advancing and bringing us to a place where our tools are becoming something much more than "tools" have ever been before. Our smartphones, our laptops, the internet itself -- things which did not even exist, and which most of us would not have even imagined could exist, a few decades ago -- are already indispensable to our lives. And they have changed us. As our tools become smarter and smarter, maybe smarter than us ... how will they change our lives, and, more importantly, how will they change us? This book does not answer those questions. Instead, it provokes them.

The author presents a delightful variety of perspectives on just what that future may hold, and just what that future could mean to who and what we are. Heavy stuff, coming from heavy thinkers, but presented relatively lightly. You don't need to be any sort of expert to be able to follow the conversations. It's a lively and engaging read, provoking thoughts that you ask yourself why you didn't think them before.

I'd recommend this book to anyone who can remember a world before Facebook and who has ever wondered how if so much has changed in the near past, how much will change in the near future. This book also be a terrific gift for anyone with the slightest interest in what the future may hold ... from the serious techie to the casual sci-fi fan. Highly recommended.

Nikola Danaylov is the MC of the Technological Singularity

The technological singularity, by one definition, is a singular, near-future phenomena in which the exponentially increasing pace of technological advancement will not be measured in functional human terms. Conversations with the Future is the compilation of some of Danaylov's most enlightening and provocative interviews about and related to the technological singularity. Topics range from industrial automation to artificial intelligence to radical life extension and much more. In my opinion, Danaylov is the best at what he does—asking the questions so that you may ponder and perhaps formulate your own answers. Highly recommended to everyone interested in the future.

John Armour is Hogan Lovells Professor of Law and Finance at the University of Oxford and a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He has been involved in policy-related projects commissioned by the UK's Department of Trade and Industry, Financial Services Authority, and Insolvency Service, the Commonwealth Secretariat, and the World Bank. He currently serves as a member of the European Commission's Informal Company Law Expert Group.


Dan Awrey is an Associate Professor of Law and Finance and Academic Director of the MSc in Law and Finance programme at the University of Oxford. His teaching and research interests reside in the area of financial regulation and, more specifically, the regulation of banks, investment funds, derivatives markets, and financial market infrastructure.


Paul Davies is a Senior Research Fellow at Harris Manchester College, Oxford, UK. He was Allen & Overy Profesor of Corporate Law, University of Oxford, from 2009-2014; Cassel Professor of Commercial Law at the London School of Economics and Political Science, 1998-2009; and, before that, Professor of the Law of the Enterprise, University of Oxford.He is a Fellow of the British Academy, an honorary Queen's Counsel and an honorary Bencher of Gray's Inn.


Luca Enriques is the Allen & Overy Professor of Corporate Law at the University of Oxford. His scholarship explores corporate law, corporate governance, securities regulation, and financial regulation. Among his many publications are numerous articles in major European and US reviews and journals, as well as several books. Enriques has held visiting appointments at the University of Cambridge, the Interdisciplinary Center Hertzliya, Harvard Law School, and the Instituto de Impresa (Madrid). He previously taught at LUISS University (Rome) and the University of Bologna and was a Commissioner at the Italian S.E.C. (Consob) between 2007 and 2012.

Jeffrey N. Gordon is the Richard Paul Richman Professor of Law at Columbia Law School and co-director of the Richman Center for Business, Law and Public Policy and the Millstein Center for Global Markets and Corporate Ownership. He is also a visiting professor at Oxford University and a Fellow of the European Corporate Governance Institute. He has written extensively on corporate governance and mergers and acquisitions over his academic career but after events in fall 2008 began teaching and writing on financial regulation. Before becoming a law professor, he worked at the US Treasury and a private law firm in New York City.


Colin Mayer is the Peter Moores Professor of Management Studies at the Said Business School at the University of Oxford. He is a Professorial Fellow of Wadham College, Oxford, and an Honorary Fellow of Oriel College, Oxford and St Anne's College, Oxford. He is a Fellow of the British Academy, the European Corporate Governance Institute, and the Royal Society of Arts. He is a member of the UK Competition Appeal Tribunal and the International Advisory Board of the Securities and Exchange Board of India. Colin Mayer was the first professor at the Said Business School in 1994, the Peter Moores Dean of the Business School between 2006 and 2011, and the first Director of the Oxford Financial Research Centre between 1998 and 2005. He was the chairman of Oxera Ltd. between 1986 and 2010 and a member of the UK Government Natural Capital Committee between 2012 and 2015. He is a director of Aurora Energy Research Ltd.

Jennifer Payne is Professor of Corporate Finance Law at the University of Oxford where she teaches courses on company law, corporate finance law, corporate insolvency law, and principles of financial regulation. She has held visiting positions at leading international institutions including the University of Auckland, NUS University of Singapore, the University of Melbourne, and the University of British Columbia. She has written widely in the field of corporate law in leading journals and edited collections, and is the author of several books, including The Oxford Handbook of Financial Regulation (OUP 2015, with Niamh Moloney and Eilis Ferran).

About the Author
David Planchard is the founder of D&M Education LLC. Before starting D&M Education, he spent over 27 years in industry and academia holding various engineering, marketing, and teaching positions. He holds five U.S. patents. He has published and authored numerous papers on Machine Design, Product Design, Mechanics of Materials, and Solid Modeling. He is an active member of the SOLIDWORKS Users Group and the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE). David holds a BSME, MSM with the following professional certifications: CCAI, CCNP, CSDA, CSWSA-FEA, CSWP, CSWP-DRWT and SOLIDWORKS Accredited Educator. David is a SOLIDWORKS Solution Partner, an Adjunct Faculty member and the SAE advisor at Worcester Polytechnic Institute in the Mechanical Engineering department. In 2012, David s senior Major Qualifying Project team (senior capstone) won first place in the Mechanical Engineering department at WPI. In 2014 and 2015, David s senior Major Qualifying Project team won the Provost award in Mechanical Engineering for design excellence.

*Starred Review* It's 1872, and 15-year-old Rachel often escapes the confines of corsets and social strictures by going for gallops on her beloved horse around her small-town Illinois home. When her father moves the family to Boston and the horse is sold, she has a difficult time adjusting to her father's demands of ladylike behavior and her mother's coaxing her toward womanly pursuits. The author of Black Storm Comin' (2005), Wilson paces the story well, with tension building: an arsonist is at work setting fires in Boston and the horses needed to pull fire equipment are falling ill at an alarming rate. At first only her grandmother seems to understand the importance of Rachel's dream of becoming a veterinarian, but soon she has other allies, and a path that appeared to be blocked begins to open before her. The love interest and the mystery that are integral to the story are secondary to Rachel's pursuit of her goal, which begins with helping one firehouse horse recover from burns. The novel's finest achievement, though, is the convincing depiction of family dynamics in an era when men ruled the household and women, who had few opportunities, folded their dreams and put them away with the linens they embroidered. Firehorse

Just as she did in "I Rode a Horse of Milk White Jade," Wilson captures beautifully a place, time period, and the relationship of a young girl with a very special horse. Having grown up near Boston, having once read an eloquent tribute to the firehorses of Rochester, New York, on a monument in the Mount Hope Cemetery, and having known and written about horses myself, the story was especially meaningful to me. My only suggestion is that I would like to know the noble "Girl" and her feisty mistress, who is about to go on to be one of the first women verterinarians, better. Perhaps a sequel is order?

The book Firehorse by Diane Lee Wilson is an insightful historical fiction story about a girl named Rachel who moves away from her hometown and leaves her horse, Peaches, behind. In the story, she has to move away from her horse only to accompany her parents and brother to Boston and find her father a job writing for a town gazette. But when Rachel's brother brings her along to see him apply for a firefighting job, her whole world turns upside down and soon she has a dying horse living in her backyard.
On the outside, this book reflects the traits of a friend and a dedicated young girl. But the inside is more of a book about friendship and the power of women in the time when they couldn't do anything, according to Rachel's father's point of view.
I love this book because it shows how young children have the power to do big things. I also love it because it is about horses and the time when horses were essential to human life, like the milk cart and the fire engine. Since the horses were needed to pull the cart, the depression really affected them. This is one of my favorite books ever.
I would definitely recommend this book to kids and teens ages 10 to 15 because this book needs a lot of inference work and has a lot of challenging words in it. I say this because younger children often don't get beyond the top layer of meanings and you need to get deep down to really understand this book. If you like books so suspenseful that they make you lean right out of your seat, you might like this book. Happy reading!

Coming of Age and Horselovers Book All in One!

Every girl who has ever loved horses will love this book. It is a horse lover's fantasy. Rachel is asked to take care of a mare and the mare ends up right in her own backyard. She's seriously burned and she needs Rachel's help. This tough old mare, queen of the firehorse team, eventually shows her gentler side to Rachel. And at the same time Rachel discovers she can pursue her passion. In her usual excellent quality of writing Diane Lee Wilson delivers another wonderful book.
