About the Author
Don Cohen, D.C., is a graduate of Palmer College of Chiropractic West and of the Upledger Institute. Since 1982 he has practiced chiropractic and craniosacral therapy in Santa Cruz, California, where he is co-director (with his wife Karen, a homeopath and chiropractor) of the Branciforte Clnic. Since 1985 he has been engaged in clinical research into the nature of neurologic adaptation strategy to musculoskeletal injury, chronic pain, and degeneration syndromes.

Best Introductory Book to Craniosacral Therapy

A clear introduction to basic concepts of Osteopathic Medicine and the specific anatomy/physiology of craniosacral therapy, This book focuses on understanding the history of craniosacral therapy through anecdotes and case histories. Specific techniques and outcomes are then presented. A good, easy to read, introduction to craniosacral therapy by one of the first people trained by Dr. John Upledger, the "father" of modern craniosacral therapy.

Great help

I'm in a class for Cranial/Sacral with a teacher who isn't very good at teaching. Frustrated with the lack of materials, a general disorderly method of giving what he does know, and his very slim instruction in palpation, I began a search for a book to help me get what I wanted. This book is fantastic! It clearly lays out the 10 step protocol and gives great tips for discovering the rhythm through palpation. The illustrations are helpful as well. I was quickly loosing any interest in a subject (CST) that I have been wanting to learn for years but this book saved the day! I showed it to my teacher and he said that it would be a good text book to use for his classes in the future. I hope, for their sake, he does.

good coverage of many topics

This second edition from 1988 is still useful and relevant to practicing engineers who need a quick reference to standard materials and processing steps for elastomers. There is advice on, for example, whether an elastomer is corrosive while molten or not. The former mandates the use of corrosion resistant holding containers, which can add significantly to the costs.

Another topic is shrinkage. During injection molding, once the substance cools, it can be a consideration. Suggestions are made for controlling the shrinkage, like varying the relative humidity or doing annealing of parts to relieve stress.

Then there is the issue of injection pressure. Some elastomers flow easily and need little forcing pressure. For what needs to be avoided is overpressure, which can result in overpacking and sticking in the molding frame.

A classic then and now

When Jason Todd died, fans grew divided. After all, it seemed inevitable. The character was too angry, too impulsive, and too poor of a replacement for the original Robin. Thus, enter Robin number three, Tim Drake.

This story is sentimental to me, so I have some biases as I grew up with one of the follow ups to this as my first comic. However, it follows both Batman and Robin (as comic series and as characters) and examines the training and developments of Tim Drake as he comes into his own.

As early 90's artwork goes, its VERY good, on par with The Sandman's best work or with the classic Green Arrow comics from the same period, if not quite up to the standards of some modern readers. It also covers the very tech-savvy, ethnically diverse, urban-intensive, world-weary style of comics from the 90's.

There are some not-quite-gimmicky parts as old cliches are rendered more dark and post-noir. Nazi technology left forgotten in subterranean labs in France are a nice throwback to the Germans-are-evil motif of more cheezy days in comics. A blind martial arts master and a Tibetan martial arts master give us two of the oldest cliches from Hong Kong Cinema and Western infatuation with Eastern martial arts, and are truly Orientalist in nature. Roving bands of Chinese martial artists examine gang identity while the lone African American hero is a jaded action hero stereotype under the deeper pretext of obsessive revenge with a character who has nothing left to loose.

But this comic does so much more. It breaks cliches, and honors tradition. And it allows a new hero to ride up out of a long tradition of heroes and begins a saga anew with Tim Drake coming into his own and claiming the role of Robin for himself.

More Chuck Dixon magic

This book covers the beginning of Tim Drake as Robin. He is the third Robin and feels a strong need to prove himself. In his first adventures he fights and is even trained by, one of the world's best martial artists, Lady Shiva. Robin races to defeat a new threat more powerful than previous enemies. The terrorist Ghost Dragons have captured a sample of old bubonic plague and plan to unleash it, killing millions.

I really like Tim Drake as Robin because he does exactly what Dixon proposes: he "complements" Batman. He is not reckless and brash like Jason; if anything he lacks confidence. However, he is arguably the best detective of the three Robins, and incredibly clever.

His determination is what really impresses me. When he is training and feels so helplessly alone, he doesn't give in. That is a true hero. I also have always liked it when Nightwing and Robin get together. They just have such a great brotherly relationship. Chuck Dixon writes both characters really well.

Chuck Dixon is really great with these "coming-of-age" stories. Robin: "A Hero Reborn" is the story of one young man's journey to become a hero. He is not so arrogant to believe that he is destined to be great, and he acknowledges humbly the dangers of the world. Despite his fear, he bravely treads onward. Tim embodies our own struggles with inadequacy and anxiety and we cheer him on as he bests each new trial. This strong empathy between reader and protagonist is reason enough to check out this book for anyone curious to the motivations of a "Boy Wonder."

Good Story (Essentially Tim Drake: Year One)

This is an awesome read for all fans of Robin. The story centers around Tim Drake's first major adventure as Robin and it does not disappoint. The story is very fun and well told and Tim Drake is one of the more relatable and likeable characters I've ever read in comics. This is essential for any Bat-Fan's collection

Romanticism, Imagination and Samuel Taylor Coleridge

Catholic priest Robert Barth outlines Samuel Taylor Coleridge's Romantic thought in a concise and easy to read manner. No, Coleridge was not just a poet; he was also a learned theologian and classicist. His Romantic thought consists of elevating the Imagination above mechanical reason, especially in theology. The Imagination is where we perceive symbol, and where we create symbols, such as in art, poetry, or music. When we create symbols, we participate in the creative action of God, the great "I Am." Thus for Coleridge, a worship service is a much better way to meet God than say, compiling a systematic theology. This is because the worship service appeals to the imagination through the symbols: bread, wine, stained glass, liturgy, music, etc.
Symbols are not "mere" representations. Symbols participate in the reality they symbolize, so that a handshake actually participates in brotherhood. A symbol, such as a handshake, is translucent and reveals eternal truth in the temporal. A symbol is almost synonymous with "sacrament," in that speaking a word of forgiveness, or breaking bread and wine, are symbols that point to actions and realities outside of themselves. While allegory fades and may be deconstructed, symbols are lasting and enduring, and are all somehow united with one another and God. Thus Coleridge owes much to neo-Platonism and the early Christian writers.
As an example of the differences between mechanical and imaginative perception, Coleridge believes that the mechanical mind only sees juxtapositions and order. A doctrine such as the Trinity seems absurd when perceived rationally, but in the imagination, the three and the one may "interpenetrate." This has implications for interpretation of the Bible. Chapter 6 of Barth deals primarily with this. Coleridge believes that literalists and anti-Christian scoffers all err, because they interpret the Bible in a mechanical way. They miss truths for words. Coleridge does not deny the historicity of the Bible per se, but believes that literal interpretation asks the wrong questions. Rather Biblical symbols, such as Jesus as both priest and sacrifice, while absurd to the literal mind, enrich the Bible's testimony when perceived by the Imagination.
This book is a great primer on Coleridge's thought. I seem to have been a kind of Romantic/Platonist since birth, so what Coleridge says resonates. Barth offers a clear summary of Coleridge's thought and current implications. If you have ever thought that mechanical "rational" thought misses meanings in life that you experience, Coleridge's philosophy might be for you. If not, buy it for historical study. A Book about Literature, Not Just Coleridge

Yes, this book is about Coleridge's theory of "symbolic imagination" (which is not Coleridge's phrase, but is wholly apropos). But it in no way should it be considered useful only to people who are interested in Coleridge. And, yes, the book is about where Coleridge's theory of literature and his theories of religion meet, and Barth, appropriately, writes from the same point of view, with the religious aspect as a key theme. But, it is also false to say that this book should be considered useful only to people coming out of a Christian or Catholic viewpoint. There may be a brief moment or two (in the 2d edition) where it seems to me that Barth slips into Christian apologetics, but for the most part the religious aspect is as Coleridge himself would have intended it: as an exploration not of religion (or any one religion) but of the spiritual.

It is there, in the spiritual, in the primary engagement with being, that Coleridge anchors both his explorations of poetry (more correctly literature as a whole) and of religion; and, it is there that the book finds its value. Indeed, I recommend the book highly for anyone interested in literature, either from the reading side or the writing side. It is the kind of critical book that cannot help but open new avenues of exploration, especially in its presentation of the symbol as experiential (as opposed to hermeneutic). This is not some general criticism, some "how to read poetry." It is argument for and demonstration of why literature -- and art in general -- of the highest order is important to the development of the individual psyche in its being in the world.

It is, of course, also argument to what is literature of the highest order. Which is, of course, what the _Biographia_ is also about.

Since I had read the _Biographia Literaria_ just prior, I have a small qualm with me speaking about what degree of knowledge of Coleridge or the _Biographia_ is necessary to Barth's volume. The ideas of _Symbolic Imagination_ are presented out of themselves as much (if not more than) out of Coleridge, which seems to me the book's intent. This is not a book about Coleridge and only Coleridge; it is a book about symbolism, if symbolism from out of how Coleridge explored the idea, presented both theoretically and practically. Half of the volume consists of engagements with poetry as demonstration to Barth's basic discerning between what he calls "poetry of reference" (non-symbolic poetry) and "poetry of encounter" (symbolic poetry). As such, the book is as much about Coleridge's and Wordsworth's poetry as it is about their theories of poetry. Do you need more than a casual, literary knowledge of Coleridge to read this book? I do not think so. However, would I recommend this book to a novice in the world of literary criticism? Perhaps. I think the chapters on poetry of reference and poetry of encounter could be read by most everyone. The more theoretical chapters, however, may be difficult for a novice to grasp. But, then, the _Biographia_ is itself not what anyone would call an "introductory" text.

In sum: If you can escape the misconception of considering the book to be a defense of Christianity or a Christian theological text (both of which it absolutely is not), this book cannot but be a rewarding endeavor. I have been recommending it to my literature friends at every opportunity since the first reading.

A Note on Editions:

I have read both editions, in order. There is a substantial difference between the two. In the second edition, Barth adds a useful prologue on criticism written on Coleridge and symbolism since the first. Also, with the expected, minor rewrites, he modifies one chapter and adds two others, to the end of increasing the theological engagements of the book. To me, this increase is nonetheless within the bounds established by the original edition, even if it did change, somewhat, the reading of the book. The book's primary thesis (both editions) is the symbol as spiritual event, and as such as the place where literature (and literary theory) and religion (and theological theory) meet. For me, the change in the editions gives more balance to the exploration by giving more words to the theological side. The book was, originally, written as a study in literature _and_ religion: so the changes were for me appropriate. Do not, however, take this as saying the second edition decreases the literary-critical value of the book in its effort to increase the theological-critical value of the book. Barth's biases are always to the fore and as such are easily navigable: i.e., this is not a book by a Catholic for Catholics. It is the combining of literature and religion, that exploration of symbol as primary engagement within both, that makes the book -- and Coleridge's own thinking on the matter -- so interesting and profitable.

With Our Heads Bowed - Why read it now?

While this book was written on research done in the 1980s, most of what it describes is still in practice now, in 2011. A profound look at life in one especially conservative Mayan community, there were times it made me so angry/frustrated I had to put the book down for awhile, cool off before I could read more. Other times I felt huge respect and admiration for how the community was working so hard to preserve their culture. I have worked with Mayan women in Guatemala for more than a decade, and much of what I read in this book explained a lot and expanded my understanding in useful ways. If you are interested in Mayan - or any traditional indigenous - culture, I highly recommend With Our Heads Bowed.

Overall, very helpful book

I selected this book as background research for a novel set in this community. I found the book to be amazingly well written, insightful, and well organized. The research is outstanding. I have visited this town, while staying in San Cristobal de la Casas. I now feel like after having gone through this book, I understand better the culture I experienced at the time, which was absolutely mystical. I highly recommend this book.

About the Author
Michael Agar received his undergraduate degree from Stanford and his Ph.D. in linguistic anthropology from the Language-Behavior Research Laboratory at the University of California, Berkeley. An honorary Woodrow Wilson Fellow, NIH Career Award recipient, and currently Fulbright Senior Specialist, he is professor emeritus at the University of Maryland, College Park, with adjunct appointments in Speech Communication and Comparative Literature, as well as an associate at Antropokaos at the University of Buenos Aires in Argentina. He was recently appointed Distinguished Scholar at the International Institute of Qualitative Methods at the University of Alberta.He works independently as Ethknoworks LLC in northern New Mexico. Ethknoworks centers on research, writing and consultation around issues in ethnography, language, complexity theory, and the organization from both theoretical and practical points of view. Lately the use of complexity theory to reformulate social service organizations occupires his time and interest. Projects now underway include translation as a model for ethnography, cultural ecology, and the "serious games" field. He is a member of several editorial boards and has served on numerous research advisory committees. In 2004 he was presented with the Leadership Award in Qualitative Inquiry by the International Institute for Qualitative Methodology.

As opposed to dismal

I have nothing but praise for Michael Agar's style. He is at ease in this medium. He can joke, be self deprecating, and yet deliver again and again. He writes with the confidence of experience and the comfort of not actually needing to do this. He interjects himself, and breaks up the potential monotony with color. He is engaging. I gave up counting how many times he dragged his love/hate relationship with his Subaru Forester stationwagon into the narrative, but it works. Both the car and the book.

Agar is having an identity crisis with his field, human social research (HSR). He says it took the wrong fork in the road 150 years ago, and has been twisted and tormented by "pure" science ever since. In sciences like maths or physics, chemistry or biology, it's all about hypotheses, numbers and replication. But when dealing with human activity, you need to take the subjects into consideration. Specifically, humans' intentionality and lived experience make HSR a different beast, with different approaches needed, and different expectations for outcomes. So while a subject might answer a structured question one way, his lived experience might provide different data, and an unexpected outcome. Agar says, "The lived experience, researcher and subject intentionality are as important to HSR as mass and motion are to physics." But the purists will have none of it.

Worse, pure science's approach is naive; its claim to be unbiased is not so much laughable as impossible, Agar says. HSR is about how you acquire the measure of the study, not about putting a rigid hypothesis to the test. He says the study itself will point to new directions and conclusions. HSR is the jazz improv of science.

Agar describes the book as a newcomer's first look at HSR. But that's not what comes across. Obviously, it contains a detailed description of the field and its history. But it is also a plea for openmindedness and flexibility, sorely lacking in science, as it takes on the mantle of religion in its structured regimentation and intolerance of outliers with nonsense talk of the earth rotating around the sun.

Where the book disappoints is that Agar has not broken out of the pack himself. Even as he approaches retirement, even though he does not fear criticism, and even though he clearly sees lost potential, he too seems held back by tradition. He is all over references to 19th century thinkers. They validate his desire to reach out and beyond. But I expected a breakout revelation of a whole new approach for this lively science. Instead, Agar is happy to have got the complaint down on paper, and leaves it to future volumes or other researchers to break away from the structures and strictures of the past.

He does have solid, recognized ideas of his own, including rich points - discoveries made in the course of a study that can change the researcher's approach, and languaculture, the acknowledgment that 1) language shapes our understanding and 2) translation is never totally accurate, which combined lead to false conclusions. But there is no radical new approach, no startling results from a dramatic new method, and no call to arms to define one.

And no word on the fate of the Subaru.

The Concepts Please

I have been greatly interested in some aspects of social science, anthropology and ethnography for orgnizational performance improvement. However, the jargon is impenetrable for an engineer like me. Also, the typical social science work like employee surveys intuitively lacked validity for performance or safety improvement. It just seemed better to go encounter the people of the organization to learn about their day-to-day lives, identify the barriers and resistances they face, and then remove them. Dr. Agar's book helped me to realize that I wasn't crazy.

The Lively Science is a very approachable book for those actually looking to make application of human social research to real problems and those, like me, who have little to no training in it. Yet, it does an admirable job of exposing the strengths and weaknesses of the two identified aspects: behavioral social science and human social research.

Dr.Agar confronts a different problem; the likes of which is being faced in multiple areas. Behavioral social science (BSS) is being applied to human social research issues. Guess what! BSS doesn't help, but it garners lots of hope ($) in successful outcomes. It is assumed that BSS will work. Evidence is ignored that that assumption is false. Insisting that assumptions are fact when there is evidence to the contrary is or has been a common mode failure in almost every organization. The book serves as a great example of one way to intervene. Those insisting that assumptions are fact when they are not must ignore the excellent case made by Dr. Agar.

On the pathway to increasing scientific awareness and use of empathy

Agar provides an historical account of the formation of behavioral social science, as envisioned by Mill, and then describes how the limitations within this BSS framework lead Brentano and Dilthey to describe a new kind of science, "a lively science". His description of this pathway along with addition of the Toulmin "making a case" model provide the necessary background to pursue social science from the perspective of human social research, an "intersubjective, nonlinear, dynamic" method of inquiry. He ends with the use of this HSR framework across the various humanities. However the standout feature of the text is his use of humor, personal anecdotes, and German philosophical terms!

Where is the standalone violin part?

Hello!

I just noticed today that the book didn't come with the standalone violin notation part. I only received the piano score (with the violin part included, but is too small) This is very sad for me. Is there something that I can do to get the standalone violin notation part that was supposed to come with it???

Helpful Molecular Biology Primer for Interdisciplinary

I'm a software engineer and needed a primer on biology without going through the epic textbook curriculum that a undergraduate bio major would work through. This book fit the bill; I needed less mastery of the subject as much as the ability to work in a team with people who had mastered it.
