Covers it all

This book is written by a theologian, and world class Mariologist, Mark Miravalle. Hence it covers all the important points concerning Our Lady, including her immaculate conception, bodily assumption, mediatrix, and private revelations. The point of view of the book is theological, but it also has apologetics material. That last chapter is devoted to common objections (typically Protestant ones) to doctrines of Mary, and the book goes through some of the historic and first known titles and devotions to Mary, which is apologetic in nature as well as theological. The book is short and very solid. One important aspect of it is that the book looks at the roles and titles of Mary in their proper relation to Jesus. This is something that is often overlooked by non-Catholic Christians, especially when considering titles like Queen of Heaven and Mother of God. Miravalle shows how these titles do not take away Jesus' glory any more than the moon robs the sun of its glory; rather, it reflects it, much as Mary reflects Christ's glory.

The book isn't wordy, but packed with information and teachings about Our Lady. It can be used by a Catholic wanting to learn more about Mary, or a non-Catholic who wants to be sure that he knows what it is the Catholic church teaches about Mary. Very good and easy read.

A short but comprehensive exploration of Marian Doctrine

The Catholic position on the virgin Mary is often misunderstood and misinterpreted. In this book Dr. Miravalle aims to rectify this. He answers many arguments that people pose against having even the merest devotion to Mary, and he draws deeply from scripture and tradition to explain the importance of such devotion.
If anything this book might be faulted for being a little repetitious. The ten questions answered at the end, are mostly a summation of the preceding chapters. However, this should not detract greatly from the value of this book.

Excellent primer on the subject of Marian Doctrine and Devotion. Takes each of the centrally held Church teachings on Mary and gives supporting references from Scripture, Papal Encyclicals, Sayings of the Early Church Fathers, and other Magisterial documents. Puts all the Marian dogmas in perspective. Easy to read. Explains commonly misunderstood notions of what Marian Devotion is. One section answers the most common and prevalent objections to what the Church teaches about Mary from non-Catholics. Concise yet comprehensive.

Leadership based on virtues, not rules

this follow-up to Covey's enormous and enduring bestseller, The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People, he applies the same framework to leadership in organizations. If you have read and remember the first book, you may find little really new in this one, although a slightly different angle on the familiar material may be more rewarding than re-reading the first. Whether or not you agree with or find useful all of Covey's seven habits, the virtue-based approach of this work can deliver the goods more lastingly than rule-based approaches that fail to change your basic method of operating. Drawing on a heritage that goes all the way back to Aristotle, Covey's habit/virtue approach to life and our priorities allows him to show convincingly that business and ethics can comfortably live together. In the midst of the incredible change continually afoot in the Innovation Economy, Covey's message is to find the principle-centered core in ourselves and our organizations. Principle-centered leadership is the natural outcome of applying Covey's original message to those in executive positions of all kinds. What is the downside to this approach? Only that this means no quick fixes. Principles and habits take hard work and may look less attractive than books offering techniques and gimmicks for improved leadership effectiveness. In the end, managers know that this downside is not real, since the quick tricks either don't work or soon fail. Covey's approach can help you find the stable, guiding core amidst the mad tumble of the business world.

"Covey is the all time leadership mentor"

This isn't a book you can read through once and understand thoroughly. Coveys writing style is superb, his understanding of human nature is uncanny.
He starts by forming a simile: the art of leadership is like farming. It requires daily vigilance: planting, watering, weeding, fertilizing, and harvesting--in that order. If a farmer owns a cow, he doesn't just milk it when he feels like it. It is a job which needs to be done twice daily, every day. Managing (Leading) a business is exactly the same, at least if you want it to be done correctly. Many managers/leaders feel that it's okay to run a business on auto-pilot. This may be a fatal error.
Covey uses the same 7 Steps as he uses in the same-titled book. He also compares his 7 Step leadership methods with those of the great W. Edwards Deming. Throughout this book the author guides the leader/person to lead by example. To allow those he leads to be self-leaders, and to feel that they are of great importance to the company.
One of the major aims of Covey is to make a Mission Statement. This, he believes, should be done by all members of a company/corporation/family, etc.. He also stresses the age old Confucious saying, "Feed a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime."
I have a great deal of respect for this man, and truly believe he walks his talk. As I read this book, many of the concepts pertained to situations in my life which I was dealing with at that very time (a little haunting, perhaps inspired?). I highly recommend this book, as well as any other by this great human being and author.

In this great book by Stephen Covey, we learn Covey's philosophy for creating more meaningful relationships and successes in the workplace. something we should be striving to implement throughout business and industry.
Coveys shows us how to implement these techniques in the home and elsewhere and the result is we will be rewarded with happiness and a fulfilling future.
Prior to reading Principle Centered Leadership, I didn't think it was possible to successfully balance my personal, family and professional life.

The son of New Yorker writer Brendan Gill grew up meeting the likes of Ezra Pound and Ernest Hemingway. A Yale education led to a job at prestigious J. Walter Thompson Advertising. But at 63, the younger Gill's sweet life has gone sour. Long fired from JWT, his own business is collapsing and an ill-advised affair has resulted in a new son and a divorce. At this low point, and in need of health insurance for a just diagnosed brain tumor, Gill fills out an application for Starbucks and is assigned to the store on 93rd and Broadway in New York City, staffed primarily by African-Americans. Working as a barista, Gill, who is white, gets an education in race relations and the life of a working class Joe . Gill certainly has a story to tell, but his narrative is flooded with saccharine flashbacks, when it could have detailed how his very different, much younger colleagues, especially his endearing 28-year-old manager, Crystal Thompson, came to accept him. The book reads too much like an employee handbook, as Gill details his duties or explains how the company chooses its coffee. This is a simple and sweet read. The author is sometimes a bit over-the-top ...

I wanted to give 4.5 stars but since that wasn't possible I felt 5 was most appropriate. This is a simple and sweet read. The author is sometimes a bit over-the-top in his self-deprecation (he can be awfully unforgiving of his faults, flaws and mistakes!) but he was so genuine that I couldn't help but find myself really liking him. It was Mr. Gill's sincerity and vulnerability that won me over and I found myself feeling truly invested in his journey.

*SPOILER ALERT* I had expected some sort of lottery win-type of ending, where the hero is restored to his former glory, or whatever, but it was satisfyingly "normal". It was Mr. Gill's sincerity and vulnerability that won me over and I found myself feeling truly invested in his journey.

a good read if you need to believe in people again

I had to review this book because the people on Amazon who gave it one star seem a little harsh in their criticism. Yes the book is about 63 year-old Michael Gill who hangs out at the Starbucks and eventually gets a job there. Sounds simple enough, right? But remember - the man is 63 years old, has been in upper-management practically his whole life, and his family comes from money. In other words, the man has the outlook of society owing him - not necessarily the other way around. This is where Starbucks comes in.

I found the book to be delightful. The only issue I had with it were that the people that worked at the Starbucks were so friendly! I have not experienced this at the majority of Starbucks I've been to. And, having worked in retail most of my life, I could relate how nerve-racking it can be to run a register for the first time (remember the man is 63) and I can't imagine what it would be like to make drinks with people shouting things at you - let alone trying to be friendly to the customers.

I found this book to be a heart-warming story about a rich man who finds that there is another side to people & how they live their lives besides what he's known his whole life. I found the writing to be normal- just like a guy who hangs out at the Starbucks - and I found the editing to be well done. The book gives you hope in people & how an ordinary day can change your life for the better.

In the acknowledgements the author gives a thanks to Tom Hanks who played his character in the movie version of the book. I Googled it & it currently sites the movie as in development. Tom Hanks would be a perfect person to play Michael Gill. I just hope that the movie sticks to the books' facts.

An Enjoyable Read

As a Starbucks partner of about the same age as MGG was when the book was written, I could empathize and identify with much of his situation. Starbucks has been a wonderful and welcoming experience and it was fun to compare my story with his.
The only reason I didn't give it 5 stars was because the writing was somewhat "elementary" and his continued referencing to his former life got a little tiresome.
But, an enjoyable, quick read.

Imperial turning-point

Tacitus' Histories ought to be more difficult than the Annals. They concern the struggle for imperial succession in the aftermath of Nero's death, in the second half of the first century AD, whereas the Annals run through the scandal-ridden reigns of Tiberius, Claudius, and Nero. They are more militaristic and conventional than the Annals, preoccupied as these are with imperial abuse and elite Roman politics. Yet I found the Histories more accessible. Tacitus' bad luck is that key parts of the Annals have been lost. If the Annals follow a year-by-year format, moreover, the Histories return to more easily graspable narrative. Tacitus' reputation as a historian is meanwhile exalted, resting on his accuracy, judgement, and caution as to sources. His style has also been praised, though surely that comes out less well in translation. Finally, he is held in high regard for having been the first to take the corruption of power as his subject.

The Histories begin just after the death of Nero in 68 AD. The claims of his successor Galba are disputed, and there soon arise two rival pretenders: Otho, back by the praetorians, and Vitellius, supported by the army of the Rhine. After Galba is murdered, though, and as the rivals battle it out in Italy, there arises a third pretender: Vespasian, father of Titus and governor in the Asian provinces. The Histories track the civil war's progress until the triumph of Vespasian, the founder of the new, Flavian dynasty. In a sense, they mark a return to conventional classical history, with its large share of military narrative punctuated by high-political machinations. At the same time, they describe a turning point and form a sequel to the Annals. For the first time since the establishment of the principate by Augustus, indeed, the empire is being shaken again by civil war. The corruption described in the Annals has set the stage for the instability narrated in the Histories, in a feedback loop that would rock the Roman empire - in between periods of renewed stability - until it would bring it down. Tacitus was Gibbon's favourite historian and, apart from style and good judgement, that this was Tacitus' underlying theme was surely the reason. Of course Tacitus himself, writing in the early second century AD, could not know that the empire would fall or when. Yet perhaps the semi-prophetic character of his Histories, precisely, is what has made them so compelling.

Jan Rubes has been a leading performer and director on stage, film, and TV, and in concert, opera, musical comedy, and drama. With an operatic career already established, the Czechoslovakia native immigrated to Canada in 1949 and was soon the leading bass in the Canadian Opera Company. He has performed throughout Canada and the U.S. both with the company and in countless solo recitals and appearances with symphony orchestras. Rubes has done more than 100 operatic roles and has appeared in more than 70 films, including the well-remembered Witness with Harrison Ford.

With his wife, Susan Douglas Rubes, he helped develop Young People’s Theatre in Toronto. A member of the Order of Canada and holder of two honourary doctorates, he has won Geminis for his film work. His life is rich in detail – he has been both a national tennis champion and an important part of the history of the performing arts in Canada.
