Book was a bit musty but it will do just fine. My father read it to us when we were kids and then to all the grandchildren and it was everyone's favorite. Now these same children tell me it's " politically incorrect" . To me, it's a great tale and my grandchildren will have it read to them!

Issa, who claims to be a Muslim medical student, is, in fact, a wanted terrorist and the son of Grigori Karpov, a Red Army colonel whose considerable assets are concealed in a mysterious portfolio at a Hamburg bank. Tommy Brue, a stereotypical flawed everyman caught up in the machinations of spies and counterspies, enters the plot when Issa's attorney seeks to claim these assets. The book works best in its depiction of the rivalries besetting even post-9/11 intelligence agencies that should be allies, but none of the characters is as memorable as George Smiley or Magnus Pym. Still, even a lesser le Carr� effort is far above the common run of thrillers. (Oct.)

Alan Furst, himself one of the greats of the genre, opines that A Most Wanted Man might be one of the author's best, not for its content so much as for its technical brilliance. But other reviewers panned the work, arguing that le Carre's outrage over recent American intelligence practices distorts the plot and renders many of the characters as mere cliches. Perhaps the consensus is that A Most Wanted Man is an enjoyable le Carre novel (and therefore much better than most thrillers)—but far from his best.

But that is an advantage, as the storyline, which is, broadly speaking, the severity and misalignments of the international "war on terror," is so disturbing to witness, and the factor of hope is staked so high, that I found I could hardly bear to reach the conclusion. I felt there was some anger buried in this writing, that it was more than fiction. It feels close to our present, conceivable, and thus it reaches into terrifying dimensions. The focus on an odd alignment of emotional ties amongst the lead characters is done in shorthand, and you have to let that be because it is an effective and merciful means to an end that is much greater.

Tough story to listen to. With the hardcopy, you can go back a few pages to pick up one of his many character threads that you may have dropped.

An interesting story but not up to his usual mind bending suspense and matter of fact endings. Cold war spies and spying are lot more interesting. But if you are into tweaking the Muslim world, you will like this.

Really? This is all you've got?

Post-9/11 hysteria and the sudden realization that the western intelligence services were caught napping seems like such an excellent backdrop for a Le Carre novel. Shadowy private banking, Muslim figures that might be terror financiers, it sounds good, right? Too bad this thing is off the rails from the start - nary a nuanced, sympathetic, or remotely complex character to be found. The plot, revolving around a simple banking transaction, moves glacially, as the naive do-good lawyer and the cynical burnt-out banker are persuaded by various intelligence service hacks to go along with a design-by-committee scheme to co-opt what might possibly be an alleged terror financing conduit. The whole point of the story appears to be the conclusion, in which inexplicable, nameless, out-of-frame black hats that might be Americans come in and upset the whole apple-cart. Really? Here we have the best political lunacy since the arms race, and one of my favorite espionage authors phones this in? Bah.

About the Author
Jeffrey J. Magnavita, PhD, ABPP, FAPA, is a licensed psychologist and marriage and family therapist in active clinical practice. A Diplomate in both counselling and clinical psychology of the ABBP and Fellow of the APA, he is the recipient of the Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution to Independent or Institutional Practice in the Private Sector for 2006 from APA for his work in unifying psychotherapy and personality systematics. Dr. Magnavita authored Restructuring Personality Disorders: A Short-Term Dynamic Approach; Relational Therapy for Personality Disorders, Personality-Guided Relational Psychotherapy: A Unified Approach; Theories of Personality: Contemporary Approaches to the Science of Personality; and was the volume editor for the Comprehensive Handbook of Psychotherapy: Psychodynamic/Object Relations: Volume I, Handbook of Personality Disorders: Theory and Practice, and Evidence-Based Treatment of Personality Disorders: Principles, Methods, and Processes. He is the Co-founder and Co-Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Unified Psychotherapy and Clinical Science. He served as the President of the Division of Psychotherapy in 2010 and has previously made a highly acclaimed DVD demonstrating his approach in a single session, as well as one on Psychotherapy Over Time (six sessions). Most recently he was the founder of the Unified Psychotherapy Project and has created a task force to map the current methods and techniques of psychotherapy. He is the creator and producer of a video series Psychotherapists Fact-to-Face, a production of the Division of Psychotherapy. Jack C. Anchin, PhD, is Clinical Associate Professor of Psychology at SUNY at Buffalo, USA and a clinical psychologist engaged in the full-time private practice for over 25 years. Dr, Anchin is also Co-Editor of the Handbook of Interpersonal Psychotherapy and has published articles and chapters on the theory and practice of interpersonal psychotherapy. His publications also include invited commentaries on relational psychoanalysis, the unification of knowledge across the natural sciences, social sciences, and humanities, and integrative research methodology in the scientific study of interpersonal psychotherapy. Dr. Anchin is an Associate Editor of the American Psychological Association (APA) Journal of Psychotherapy Integration and has served on the inaugural Advisory Council of APA's Clinician's Research Digest: Briefings in Behavioral Science, and on the editorial boards of the Journal of Integrative and Eclectic Psychotherapy and the APA journal Psychotherapy: Theory, Research, Practice, Training. With Dr. Jeffrey J. Magnavita, he is Co-Founder and Co-Editor of the electronic Journal of Unified Psychotherapy and Clinical Science. Dr. Anchin is an invited charter member of the Society for the Exploration of Psychotherapy Integration. He is a Fellow of the APA and is the 2011 recipient of the APA Division of Psychotherapy's Distinguished Psychologist Award for contributions to psychology and psychotherapy.

Psychotherapy unified

It is unusual for writers to include the psychological, biological, and cultural dimensions of human functioning, and to do so within a systems perspective. It is unusual for writers to cover all of the various modalities of psychotherapy, such as individual, couples, family, and group. It is unusual for writers to attend to research as well as their clinical observations. Magnavita and Anchin do all of these, and by doing so, help readers to find their way out of the blooming, buzzing confusion that has characterized the presentation of approaches to psychotherapy.

About the Author

Michael Nowicki, EdD, FACHE, FHFMA, is a professor of health administration and director of the School of Health Administration at Texas State University, where he has won numerous awards for his teaching, research, and service. He has also taught for universities in California, Indiana, Kentucky, Missouri, and New Jersey and for several healthcare-related associations. Before his academic appointments, Nowicki held various administrative positions in healthcare organizations around the country.
