The Best of the Besy

I have read all of the Ben Hope novels and I can say they keep getting better and better. Ben Hope is such a wonderful character with emotion, feeling, sadness, a man who believes in true justice and retribution. Scott Mariani has one of the best characters in fiction. Ben Hope is a reluctant hero, but a hero none the less. If you have not read the Ben Hope series you don't know what you are missing.

This book is steeped in Irish history regarding the famine. It is extremely well written. Ben hope makes Jason Bourne look like a choir boy! You like action,mystery...scott Mariani is your author to read! Trouble is you can't put it down! I've read all of the Ben Hope books..loved them all!

Once again Scott has written a superb thriller. His building of the characters is very good and the action sequences are extremely well written.

The story line is fast flowing and there are very few slow spots in the novel - I cannot wait until the next one.

Joy of Photo Cooking

This book provides clear step-by-step instructions for creating many traditional photographic and graphic arts effects using Photoshop. It does not deal with color correction and retouching, but with creating new images based on photographs. It covers a wide variety of effects. You won't use all or even most of them, but if you are interested in this kind of work there should be enough here to make the book worthwhile.

This book is nominally for the CS3 version of Photoshop, and includes a good summary of the new features, but doesn't use very many of them in the recipes.

The most impressive effects were in the chapter "Graphic Art Effects". This chapter deals with creating traditional painterly images such as water color, pencil drawing, pen and ink, and even woodcut. Unfortunately this is also the area where Photoshop gives you the least help--the recipes here are essentially that you do a little bit of prep work, and then you trace the photograph by hand.

Other interesting examples were applying a flat tattoo to a curved body, adding a rainstorm, adding a rainbow (surprisingly easy with an existing rainbow gradient), caricatures (distortion), and adding a simulated wood look under a photograph. It also includes the ever-popular "fully engulfed in flames" look, saved from banality by including flame reflections in a polished saxophone.

The book doesn't do much explaining in the recipes, but it does have a good summary of Photoshop features in the beginning of the book, including a lot about layers (which you will use heavily in these recipes). Unlike many other books the techniques do not depend very much on the correct choice of values for the many Photoshop parameters. Most of the recipes take about ten steps, which I think is a good balance of complexity against the impressive final results.

There are many intermediate screen shots so that you can check your progress (handy if you tend to lose your place and leave out steps). My only significant gripe about the book is that the recipes are printed in a tiny sans serif font (I measured it at 8 points on 9 point line spacing).

Very Good Feature: the sample images are freely downloadable at the book's web site rather than on CD.

A Somewhat Difficult Recipe Book

I have the original CS version of this book plus this one and both books are very similar in content.There has been no CS4, CS4 or CS6 editions of this book.
If you have later than CS3 versions of Photoshop you may find it difficult to follow as various controls have been re-named or changed.
If you persevere with the instructions on how to achieve the effects, the results are quite worthwhile. However the main beef I have with this book is that the author assumes you know where to find the various Photoshop controls and so just says 'go to' ... whereas similar effects books clearly flag the position.
Also, as Photoshop has progressed, some of these effects are now rather outdated.

Not what I expected

I found the title to be a little misleading. Having read (and owning) several of Kelby group books I found "Photo Effect Cookbook" a repeat of those. If you are into graphics using a photograph I am sure it is helpful. More for that interest than the photographer interested in improving their images through Photoshop. I ended up after a week returning the book to the vendor. Not because it was bad, but because it wasn't what I wanted.

Excellent, easy-to-read, pro and con format for topics

This introductory text seems to me to offer students a well rounded, topic-oriented, introduction to philosophy. There are five main topic categories with four to six sub topics in each. The topics are presented in a pro-con format, with Washburn writing as an advocate of the pro, con and sometimes middle position. He puts himself in the position of a defender of each position, summarizes their arguments and forcefully presents them as an advocate might. These are written in a style that should be very easy for students to understand, without compromising substance. Each sub section is followed by a brief look at a specific philosophical method or technique (such as arguments, analgoies, and more specific techniques) and by a summary outline of the nature of the dilemma just presented. Both of these sections are very useful in introducing critical thinking techniques, analytic tools philosophers use, and for pin-pointing the precise nature of the issues raised in the pro-con sections. While I have not yet taught from this book, I am using it in all my intro classes this fall. I anticipate that my students will find the book gets them into important topics, provides a good outline of the various positions taken by philosophers on the topics, and gives them additional insight into what philosophy is and how it is practiced. I am very much looking forward to trying the text out next semester. There is also an instructor's manual available, but I have not yet received my copy, so I cannot comment on it. Overall, the only possible drawback is that this is not a book that contains any primary source materials, either as excerpts or full texts of articles. If you are the kind of instructor who wishes such primary sources, perhaps a supplemental anthology would help. Otherwise an excellent topic-oriented text!!

Excellent Explanation of COBIT 5 from End to End

This book belongs in the reference library of an IT auditor. The author walks through COBIT 5, an upgrade in the COBIT framework recently released by ISACA, from end to end. COBIT 5 integrates the Balanced Scorecard and a concept labeled as "Enablers" with an earlier version of COBIT. COBIT 5 is significantly more powerful than the previous COBIT releases but mapping the new concepts into an integrated whole concept can be daunting for the practitioner. For those adapting COBIT 5 and the new concepts, the book is straightforward and easily digestible. Given the author’s extensive professional background, it could have been much more technical, but the author chose to communicate in a practical voice suitable for a wide variety of audiences including senior management and a board member who may be hearing about COBIT 5 for the first time. The author describes the book as a management guide. It is a certainly that and more particularly if the IT auditor is trying to comprehend and apply COBIT 5 concepts. As a CISA and having executive IT roles in my past career, I recommend this book.

This book is a disappointment. It doesn't tell you anything that you can't already read on the ISACA website (excluding all the historical stuff). It also isn't any easier to read or provides any new perspective etc. Big disappointment. It's also super small incl. appendices, tables etc.

Revealed through Balanced Mind

Perhaps, it may sound presumptuous for me to attempt to translate life's purpose when millions of people are floundering in the sea of mediocrity without the slightest knowledge of their own individual destiny, not aware that they have any particular purpose in life. Of such is our world of misfits, people without hope, without fulfilment. To them the world is so vast and they, so insignificant. Little do they know that being an individual channel of universal and conscious mind, they represent the greatest power in the universe, either for good or evil depending upon the knowledge and balance of their minds.
It might be termed that God the Principle of Conscious Intelligence is ever broadcasting the Divine Plan or the Reason of Being, as the light and film in a projection machine throws the light and drama upon the screen, which in the universal sense means: life. The missing key to the clarity and perfection of the picture as universally broadcasted is the knowledge of how to focus individual mind. The missing key to life and wisdom is the principle of how to focus and clarify human concept that man might see, to a greater, deeper, and broader degree, the picture of life and the part he must play as that focusing medium called and designed as God's temple, the instrument of Conscious Intelligence.
Because man's mind is not focused to wisdom and man depends upon self and human experience as a guide, everything man attempts seems to lead to chaos and confusion. Even the seemingly tremendous progression of modern science has only led our civilization, if it may be so termed, to the brink of an atomic doomsday where perhaps the greater part of species may be destroyed for thousands of years. The human race of today may be smart but lacks divine intelligence. The salvation of life upon this Earth depends upon, and is contained in, that greatest of all mysteries—human mind—and until that key has been discovered, man will dwell in a world of animal and human emotion where man will become the greatest destroyer and killer of all times.
Mind is the only potential to divine wisdom, to love, service, unity of spiritual purpose, and universal brotherhood. Uncontrolled desires and emotions are the pathway to complete destruction. Already, man is destroying everything that is fine and beautiful upon the Earth, having unleashed passion, human greed, and complete mental distortion of the true facts of life. Man is completely lost; science has not the key to wisdom, truth, and cause, but has merely stumbled upon a few facts through a distorted concept of effect. Already science realizes that it has not the answers to even the most simple of human problems. There must be an answer to the clarification of human concept; and to this cause, the writer offers the following humble discussion of points that seem so relative to constructive mental and spiritual progression, for man must progress with the ages or be forced to start right at the bottom of the rung of evolution, time and time again. Too many empires have fallen, showing lack of continuity of mental and spiritual wisdom, and lack of human fulfilment and destiny.

This book is a whole new outlook on human purpose, looking at a much bigger picture than the typical "getting and spending." It makes you want to live every day consciously, with purpose, and makes you want to know more about your own, individual purpose. Very thought-provoking.

Having read through this manuscript when in its formative stages, I highly recommend this book to anyone who is researching the Pentecostal Movement or the Azusa Street Revival of Los Angeles that began in the spring of 1906. It is also a good sourcebook for those interested in Black History as William Seymour figures prominently among African-Americans of the 20th Century. Larry Martin has done an excellent job in ferreting out little known facts about William J. Seymour, the leader of the Azusa Street Revival. He has also uncovered information regarding Seymour's family and his early life in Louisiana and other places he traveled before arriving in Los Angeles in 1906. Some of the background information he gives regarding everyday life in Southern Louisiana and in Los Angeles near the turn of the century are essential to the understanding of William J. Seymour and the role he played in the Black Community and in the beginnings of the Pentecostal movement. Having contacted a number of different religious and local archives, looking through old newspapers, census records, city directories, and the like, Dr. Martin has a clear understanding of who William J. Seymour was. This is the most complete biography of William J. Seymour which has been written to date. When combined with his reflections and documentation of the famed Azusa Street Revival, this makes an excellent backdrop for understanding the Pentecostal movement and current revivalism around the globe.

Without question, Martin has been thorough in documenting the life and times of William J. Seymour, leader of the Azusa Street Mission during its development and flourishing in the early 1900's. His text is enriched with a wealth of photographs, including many from his personal collection. These show the many persons and several places associated with the Azusa Street movement. He also depicts the unfriendly and demeaning treatment of the movement by the Los Angeles press of that time, including its use of racial stereotyping and crude humor. He has thoroughly combed through the many periodicals and other print sources in order to capture as many details as can be gathered at a time that is remote from the original events. This is the first of a series of books that Martin has prepared on Azusa Street. Chapter organization and indexing simplify the search for particulars that may interest the reader.
