I also paid for another one of his books?

Next to Branson's "Screw It, Lets Do It", the most poorly written book (short or long) I have ever read. Like his "Screw It..." book, appears Branson got this one published only because he owns the publishing company. Ditto from my review of his "Screw It..." book -- appears making a few bucks on his earlier "Virginity" book made him think he could rephrase content and sell as two more books with more or less merely different titles. Apparently Branson runs his business world better than he writes.

I recommend this book to all parents of teenagers and pre-teens

I recommend this book to all parents of teenagers and pre-teens. And as far as my recommendation goes, I recommend this to preteens and teenagers as well. This book was written directly from an actual diary that tells the true story of a 'real' girl (not a fictional or a made up person, but a real girl who learned about drugs the hard way) who gets caught up in drugs when she's just trying to fit in with the 'popular kids'. I read this book for the first time as a teenager. Now that I'm a parent, I believe this book serves not only as a warning, but it gives parents an idea of what behavior to look for, what questions to ask when your children get old enough to go places without you and it serves as a warning to all parents to be as sure as you can be that you truly know who your children's friends are. Young people that use drugs know all the tricks, they know what to say, know what a parent wants to hear and this book will assist you in determining when to ask questions and when to keep quiet but be extremely watchful of them AND their friends.

who felt like an outcast

In the book, Go Ask Alice, a young girl, who felt like an outcast, was invited to a party. The kids who were there were considered popular at her old school. She was so excited to finally be accepted by them, all she ever really wanted was to be one of them. During the party, they decided to play a game. The girl wasn't sure what the game was, but decided it would be a good idea to participate. A few moments when by, and then she started to feel weird. She soon found out that she had just taken a drug called LSD. This is what started it all. The girl became addicted. Her life went into a downward spiral. She had left home, took more and more drugs, and put herself into a lot of danger. She experienced highs and lows throughout her time with drugs, and this book goes into depth with personal recollections of how she felt through it all. It explained how easy it was for something that wasn't in her control to begin with to get out of hand and turn into something much worse. When it first happened at that party, she had continuously told herself that she doesn't “think [she’ll] ever try it again,” but also never wanted to give up the feeling of each trip. That's what I like about this book. It talks about why she enjoyed taking drugs, but also shows the terrible consequences that she had to face because of it. It showed her struggle each time drugs were near her, and how much willpower it took for her not to take them. The situations were somewhat realistic, and showed how easy it was for her to hide her addiction from the people she was close with. You truly never know who around you could be like Alice. I would recommend reading Go Ask Alice, but it was not exactly what I expected it to be. I thought it was actually the young girl’s diary, when in reality an author wrote it. This took away from the lessons and meaning the book aimed to teach. Another critique I would have is that it was fast paced and felt like time went by very quickly, causing you to feel like you missed a lot of her life. Overall, it was well written and worth reading. LK

Interesting, but not super impressive

“Go Ask Alice”, written by an anonymous author, contains stories of a teenage girl whose life is torn apart by her addiction to various drugs . “Alice”, thought to be the main character of the book, becomes involved in numerous situations in which she experiments with drugs. Although her first experience with drugs was without her knowledge, she lets herself go deeper and deeper into the new world she has discovered. Whether it was doing drugs, dealing them, or running away from home, this book explores the effects addiction can have on the human body and mind.
While I feel this book is a great lesson for teens when it comes to the dangers of drug addiction, it also has its flaws. For example, while it portrays itself as a real story, the novel is completely fictional. Now, although the book has a great lesson by itself, when the reader finds out it is in fact NOT based on a true story, it almost ruins the lessons within the novel. Many parts of the book are also extremely exaggerated. For example, Alice runs hundreds of miles away not once, but twice, from her family and friends. The book even describes how she found a job in San Francisco, where she’s hired by a man who owns a “little shop in the lobby of an incredibly expensive hotel”. Even though this could happen in theory, the chances are unlikely and in my opinion it was all too much. My overall opinion of the book is it was just an okay book. It didn’t blow me away, but kept me interested enough to keep reading at the same time.
Having said that, Go Ask Alice still scares readers using her experiences whether they’re real or not. While the times she went through may have been crazy, they put in perspective how drugs and addiction can completely ruin someone’s life in the matter of weeks. All in all, I wouldn't recommend this book to anyone who is looking for an extremely well written novel, considering that it is written in the form of a teenage diary. However, I would recommend it to anyone looking for a shorter read, as well as someone who would like to be informed about the effects of addiction on the human brain through reading experiences.

I've read every word of the I Hunt Killers trilogy, including all the prequels now, and it's been an entirely rewarding experience. The prequels all grant the reader a little insight into the supporting cast of the series. Getting to see Jazz through the eyes of the key figures in his life allows you to comprehend more rationally their desire to support him and their willingness to follow him into danger. If you have any lingering questions about the motivations or indeed sanity of the friends who stand by in dark times, these short stories will help you see the world of Lobo's Nod through their eyes.

Brilliant!

This book is not only about guidelines for finding a new job, but it is also a brilliant pathway to discover different sides of your own self. I highly recommend this book to those who feel lost and are looking for a better life for themselves but don't know what should be their first step. This wonderful book helped me to overcome a state of melancholy and gave me the incentive to try again and keep moving forward. It is inspiring and shows the actual possibility of living a life happy!!! It is one of the best books I've read so far.

Great Guidance

I am taking a "radical sabbatical". I just didn't know it until I read this book. If you are looking to make a career change, but are unsure what you want to do this book is perfect. It doesn't provide lists of careers based on personality types or tests, it provides guidance on how to do the job research based on your interests. It helps you come to terms with possible salary changes and education requirements. I'm thoroughly enjoying the process and wish I'd found the books years ago or at the very least 4 months ago when I first lost my job.

Worth a read. No revelations or prescriptions, but a good set of questions to think on...

It's a lot of "obvious" advice, sure. But much like proverbs, quotations and other types of positive reaffirmation, one can never get enough of them. I think it gets the job done for its target audience. If you're looking for a push or a nudge into the wilderness that is "following your dream, not just your career goal", this book is a worthy addition to your psychological launchpad. The examples and stories are only mildly motivating but true value of the book lies in the set of questions the author asks you answer for yourself. If you take them seriously, they may go a long way toward identifying exactly what fulfilling work would look like to you. It worked for me, somewhat. It motivated me set aside time everyday to think hard about what I would call fulfilling work. The questions provide a decent framework. The process is meditative and introspective and requires a lot of emotional stamina. It may take a while. I don't expect overnight epiphanies and, I suspect, neither should most people.

I gave it 4 stars and not 5 because I don't think the book will resonate with everyone. For example, if you're married with kids and a mortgage and other responsibilities, some of the advice will seem impractical.

Good choice to clarify Health Behavior models

I found this book helpful in clarifying the development and practice of Health Behavior models. I am new to the study of Health Behaviors and found the Glanzer test too academic to get a good grasp of the concepts. This book (Essentials)***not the other Edberg book (Essential Readings) really helped me to better understand the concepts and the application of the models in the field.

This book provided the entrance into my Master's in Public Heath program and I immediately knew that this program was perfect for me. The book discussed the bare realities of public health behavior and expressed proven methods to implement change and purposefully evaluate it. It also provides many useful resources. Great read!

A Guidebook To Chase/Follow Your Dreams!

So...I thought I was a failure. I tried and it didn't work. I waited a few weeks and I tried again. It still didn't work. I waited a few weeks and I tried again. It still didn't work! I just can't do it. I cannot create a working pattern! I have lost my touch. I can't seem to do anything right. So I quit. I gave up. But, I still felt like God was tugging at my heart to try again. Why? I asked! I keep failing!

Then...

I started a book called Chase The Lion. I wasn't even halfway through the book when the proverbial light bulb went off in my head! As I read, "Games aren't won on game day. Games are won in the weight room, the film room, the locker room." I continued to read the chapter and I read this, "I don't know what dream you are chasing, but you have to prove yourself one swing, one rehearsal, one practice, one book at a time." I completed the chapter and realized I was not a failure. I had to try every day, I had to work harder, I could not give up when I had a failure slow me down, it IS one step at a time! It IS trying one more time! It IS failing one more time! It IS not giving up! You got to read this book! It CAN change the way you perceive your dreams! It CAN give you new courage! It CAN put you on the God-given path you should be on! It CAN show you how God will show up for you! I was giving up too easily! I was not a failure! I had to become stronger in my convictions, no giving up! Nothing is won by sitting in a recliner, get up and run to your lion! Chase it! Hunt it! Go for it!

You can do it! This book is well written and so easy to understand the path to chase your lion/dreams! Every word makes sense and each chapter brings you either closer to conviction that you CAN do it or you just don't want to try that hard! I dare you to read it!

The first thing that caught my attention about this book was the title, Chase The Lion: If Your Dream Doesn't Scare You, It's Too Small. As an avid reader, I have come across a lot of books with catchy titles, but I found myself repeating this title to myself while I was at work, home, and even out running errands.

When I did find some quiet time to open the book - I was unable to close it. True Story: I read The Lion Chaser's Manifesto at least five times before I began reading the book. One of the things I love about this book was the stories he shared. It's a good thing to hear about faith but it's even better when you are given examples of how GOD moved and is continuing to move in other people's lives - including ours.

The Bible is full of field-of-dream moments.

Imagination is God's gift to you

Chase the Lion challenges the reader to look their "Lion" aka fears/hurdles directly in the eye and run towards them. RUN TO THE ROAR!!! The author writes with such candor it's as if he is sitting right across from you encouraging you along that way. I think I have carpal tunnel from using my highlighter so much while reading this book.

Having read "In a Pit with a Lion on Snowy Day" just three years ago, I found Batterson's sequel "Chase the Lion" to be absolutely superb! Mark is a master story teller. His ability to intertwine meaningful stories into his writing engaged me in an exceptional way. For people who might say that he is extending a story beyond its biblical context I hear you. Nevertheless, as Christians who bear the image of God, within bounds I see nothing wrong with using our God-given creativity to tell the story behind the story.

While there is so much that I like about this book, in particular I found his guidance to struggling writers in Chapter 13, Snowy Day, in sections "Art of the Start" and "Eighty Percent Certainty" to be very worthwhile. Like many writers we either fail to start or we get so wrapped up in perfecting our words that we do not write anything. A real shame especially for those called to write. Or as Mark says, "Are you called to write? If the answer is no, don’t waste your time. If the answer is yes, then anything less is disobedience.”

Again, I highly recommend this book for many reasons. In particular if you are just going through the motions of life trying to get to the end without messing up as fair warning this book will rock your world off of its axles!

Short, very sweet and on fire

A great trilogy. Although the story was short, you were very in tune with these characters. Most stories you don't have enough time to get the feel of the MC's to even care, but with Allen and Tom, you feel them right away. They are both intent on the other and exploring each other to the fullest. I just love them!!

worth the $

this was one of the better books ive read lately. unlike some of the other erotic novels this one actually had a rather intresting story line. i would recomend that you purchase the 2nd book 'the mark of the vampire queen' as well. both books are rather long and well writen. this was one book i actually didnt find myself fliping through and skiping segments to try and keep my attention. i only wish there were more.

This one was very cerebral. There was alot of sex in it (hot, I might add), but the focus was definitely on the character's thoughts, politics, feelings, conflict. I did like it, btu at first wasn't sure I wanted to read another 400 pages of the turmoil. Also, at first the SM in the book was borderline too much for me. But once I got emotionally involved & the dynamics changed, I was fine. Joey Hill definitely pushes the comfort level, but does it so beautifully that without it the story would not have been the same.
In any event, I did buy Mark of the Vampire Queen, which was EVEN better than this one, though without this one first, I would have been lost. I do recommend this series.

Absolutely SMOKIN'!

I read the reviews of this book and debated ordering it....even put it off for months because, while I love almost all vampire novels, I wasn't particularly drawn to a story about a dominant female vampire (I usually like stories the other way around where the males are dominant).

Curiosity got the better of me and I thought "Eh, what the heck!" and I ordered it.

I am SOOOO glad I did. Not only is this book well written (and with plenty of erotic, "get-you-all-hot-and-bothered" scenes) but much to my delight, it's a true love story too! It's a very touching story of a man who finally finds himself and a vampire queen who is incredibly tough yet has weaknesses just like humans do.

It's truly excellent!
