About the Author

Alex Thio is Professor of Sociology at Ohio University. Born of Chinese parentage in Penang, Malaysia, he grew up in a multicultural environment. He acquired fluency in Mandarin (modern standard Chinese), Malay, and Indonesian. He also picked up a smattering of English and Dutch. He took French and German in high school and college.

�

Professor Thio attended primary school in Malaysia and high school in Indonesia. He then came to the United States and worked his way through Central Methodist College in Missouri, where he majored in social sciences. Later, he studied sociology as a graduate student at the State University of New York at Buffalo, and he completed his doctorate while working as a research and teaching assistant.

�

Professor Thio regularly teaches courses in deviance, introductory sociology, social problems, and criminology. In addition to teaching, he enjoys writing. He is the author of the Sociology: A Brief Introduction , Society: Myths and Realities (Penguin Academic), and Deviant Behavior .

Great for school

This book came in as expected and I used it hardly for one semester. It was opened a few times for reference, and the binding fell apart. I was unable to send this back because of the poor quality of make.

Nobody is unimportant.

Rescued is a short story that takes place right before the last chapter of the previous book in The Missing series.
Chip, Jonah, Katherine, Daniella and Gavin have managed to rescue two of the Romanov children and a Russian servant, Leonid. The short story covers the time spent in the time hollow and focuses on Leonid as he wonders if it would have just been a better thing to stay in the past.
This bit in the book was emotional for Jonah and so I can see why an equally emotional piece of the story would not be included in the final draft. However, I felt this short story was needed, because it filled in a lot of skimmed over characters interactions and fully rounded off the most underused character in the book-Leonid. The entire story had a lot of depth and in the few pages it got, Haddix crammed in a ton of character, and spent a lot of time exploring the ramifications of being yanked in between times-something I feel the books could do a little more of. Surrounded with royalty from times long past and faced with video of a devastated post revolution-Russia, Leonid keeps asking himself, What makes ME important to history?
The plot kept moving in between action, emotion, friendship and fits in cameos of everybody, and without giving away one of the most action based plot points, one paragraph gave away which character had changed the most since the beginning of the series-JB. I know I am always singing his praises but the climax of the story-trust me, you will know it when you see it, really embodied the famous moment in Doctor Who where the Doctor says that, "In all of space and time, I've never met someone who was unimportant."
Haddix managed to keep a fast plot moving while giving Leonid the spotlight and showed off her talent at balancing trauma and action. While I wish we would have gotten a little bit more of a hint of what would happen in the next book, Haddix scored with this short story.

Leonid tells of his rescue and introduction into the future.

This book is a condensed version of the latest in the Missing series written by Margaret Peterson Haddix. It is about a rescue of several of the Romanov children of the Russian Tsar Nicholas and Alexandra and a teenage male servant Leonid. This rescue involved JB the Time Agent and carried out by several of the children who have become regulars in Haddix's books. Leonid tells the story in present tense of his rescue with the two Romanov children and of their preliminary introduction into the future. Readers enjoying Haddix's The Missing Series will enjoy this one too.

Sad This Series Is Over

Really good, fitting conclusion to this middle readers series that adults can enjoy as well! I love time travel, and this book wrapped up this time travel journey nicely. I've grown to love these characters, both the tweens and the adults, and I enjoyed learning how everything turned out. Looking forward to more books by this prolific author.

Dr. Jay E. Adams is Director of Advanced Studies and Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Escondido, California. He received his B.A. from Johns Hopkins University, his B.D. from the Reformed Episcopal Theological Seminary, his S.T.M. from Temple University, and his Ph.D. from the University of Missouri. In addition to having served as a pastor and then a Professor of Practical Theology at Westminster Theological Seminary in Philadelphia, Dr. Adams has been the Dean of the Christian Counseling and Educational Foundation, Laverock, Pennsylvania, since its founding in the early 1970s. He has written over fifty books, translated the New Testament into English (The Christian Counselor’s New Testament), and lectured throughout the world. About the Author

Jay E. Adams (PhD, University of Missouri) is a former director of advanced studies and professor of practical theology at Westminster Theological Seminary, as well as a retired pastor. He has written over fifty books on pastoral ministry, preaching, counseling, Bible study, and Christian living. His books include Competent to Counsel, The Christian Counselor’s Manual, and Marriage, Divorce, and Remarriage in the Bible.

Theology and Counseling - Do they go together?

Absolutely! In fact, you can't have true biblical counseling without doctrine. Adams wrote this book almost 30 years ago to "convince the reader that truth and godliness are interrelated in such a way that it isn't possible to have one without the other, and that, therefore, counselors must become biblical theologians..." (pg 307) This is a follow-on to Adam's book "Competent to Counsel" that I have also reviewed and found to be very helpful.

I can recommend this book as generally beneficial but not as much so as "Competent to Counsel", "Instruments in the Redeemer's Hands" by Paul David Tripp, and "How People Change" by Timothy Lane and Paul David Tripp. The point of such nouthetic counseling books is that counseling must be grounded in Scripture, specifically in the Gospel of Jesus Christ who can transform the heart - to the ends that the soul finds satisfaction in the preeminence and glory of Christ Himself.

The book is laid out much like a systematic theology. Adams connects issues of counseling with various biblical doctrines. For example,

1. Related to the doctrine of the Scriptures (pg 16-56)...

All other eclectic counseling methods are setting up rival systems that compete with the Bible (v8-9). We must know what Scripture says and that it communicates authoritatively to counselees (pg 13). The authority does not come from the counselor (pg 20). Only the scriptures have the power to transform( 2 Tim 3:15-17) (pg 36-37). We understand our environment that surrounds us from the scriptures (pg 38-56).

2. Related to the doctrine of God (pg 57-93)...

The Believer can find encouragement in the names of God (pg 57-60). Counselees should understand that all that is happening is taking place in the presence of God, for His glory and they should be dependent on Him in Prayer (pg 61-87)...as opposed to self-sufficiency (pg 67). C.f. study of the words/synonyms for prayer - pg 71-74. God does hear hypocritical, resentful , pharisaical, self-centered, unbiblical, and self-addressed prayers (pg 78-87). I would have like to seen here more exposition of texts that boast in the glories of Jesus Christ Himself.

3. Related to the doctrine of Man (pg 94-173)...

Normally, in psychology, the therapist is determining the "standard" of behavior and how the counselee should live (pg 102). Rather, the standard is Jesus Christ in all of His perfections, and we should look unto Him and depend on His righteousness (pg 100-105). Man is basically a dichotomy of body and soul/spirit (unified yet two-fold) (pg 110-117). Man is responsible for his sin and totally depraved (in all parts and aspects, man is corrupt) (pg 141-143). God is NOT in the business of just "reforming" behavior but RENEWING through the Gospel in regeneration (pg 120-121).

4. Related to the doctrine of Salvation (pg 174-232)...

Adams coins the term "super redemption" to refer to Christ's amazing work of grace in elevating a person positionally in Christ. That same power allows us not to "settle" for anything less than what God designed for our lives. As a result of salvation, Christians are able to forgive and ask forgiveness of others (pg 184-232).

5. Related to the doctrine of Sanctification (pg 233-275)...

The Gospel results in change in person, not merely actions (pg 238). We are not merely to stop doing something. We are to "put off" and "put on" (pg 240), all grounded in the grace of Jesus Christ's work. We continue our walk in obedience (endurance) (pg 244). We must walk by the Spirit and depend on Him for the fruit of the Spirit (Gal 5, 1 Tim 6:11, 2 Tim 2:22) (pg 249-262). We must take definitive, concrete action ("radical amputation") in dealing with our sin (Matt 5:27-30) (pg 263-270). We will also have a different view of suffering than an unbeliever and should be counseled that way (2 Cor 4:17) (pg 271-275). We need each other within the context of the church to aid in our growth through discipleship in the Word of God (pg 276-306).

Building a Foundation

In, "A Theology of Christian Counseling: More Than Redemption," biblical counseling pioneer, Dr. Jay Adams, offers a solid theological foundation for Christian counseling. As he notes, many people have written theologies, many have written counseling manuals, but until his book, no one in the 20th century had attempted a focused theology of counseling.

Dr. Adams discusses the ten classic doctrines of the historic Christian tradition, providing an introduction to evangelical theology. He then relates each doctrine to the field of biblical counseling.

As his subtitle suggests ("More Than Redemption"), the Christian life does not end at redemption, but begins there. Thus, much of "A Theology of Christian Counseling" appropriately focuses upon sanctification (the doctrine of the Christian's growth in grace). Adams is at his best here as he dissects the process of putting off the old way (mortification or, as he calls it, "dehabituation") and putting on the new way (vivification or, as he calls it, "rehabituation").

In his introduction, Dr. Adams states that "A Theology of Christian Counseling" was meant only to be a first salvo. He asks that others come behind him and develop more in-depth theologies related specifically to biblical counseling. In this sense, Dr. Adams stated the one limitation of his own book--though an excellent start, its breadth of coverage leaves it lacking somewhat in depth of theology and in depth of methodological application. However, as an introduction to the field, there is none better.

About the Author

Stephen A. Marshall is a professor of entomology at the University of Guelph, where he developed a major insect collection and carries out research on insect systematics and biodiversity. He has discovered hundreds of new species, several new genera and even two new subfamilies. He is the author of Insects: Their Natural History and Diversity.

There is NO need to read any reviews about this book, just buy it. It is the best book written about flies ever, and if you have even the slightest interest in this subject: this is your book. Just buy it - do not waste your precious time reading what other people think... I talked with many professional Dipterists, they all agree, it is the best book (and will be for a long time to come)... even E.O. Wilson endorses it, and he is not a fly-guy (he is an ant guy of course, and one of the greatest).. So if you are still reading this, instead of reading the book, let me tell you that this is a BIG book, packed full with the most amazing fly pictures (Steve is just one of the best photographers out there), loaded with knowledge, interesting stories and great insight about flies, their biology, their interactions with other organisms, their role in the universe, and it comes with very useful (and easy to use) keys to the families of flies... Every page reflects Steve's deep passion for this amazing order of insects - and this makes the book a completely infectious read. No matter if you are somebody who has no idea about flies, or a seasoned scientist, after reading this book you will look at flies in a different way.

Obviously I am a biased reviewer, but there is no question that this book well illustrates the great diversity of flies as well as summarizes their importance to us (man). There is no better source for any one interested in flies, which make up more than 10% of the World's known biodiversity.
